Diary Entry for 11/11/1968

No mail. No school. Jim wrecked his Alpine 1 year ago today. Merrill went to Mills. 4-H meeting here at 12:30. Foods, Let’s explore. We postponed meeting until later. Only Loraine, Marie, and Donna came. Most kids sick.

First snow to stay. Agway dinner at the school We didn’t go. Southern states have heavy snow. Very stormy here. Started about 11:15 AM. Everything canceled. I made cookies. Leslie’s birthday. Merrill and I went up to Philadelphia to bank.

Most all schools closed. Not so windy or snowy today. Snow plow over for first time this year. We ordered windows and door for porch from Raymond’s Specialties Inc. Two men here to measure. $534. Made pizza. Rebekah’s called off because of stormy weather.

We went to city for groceries. Did some Christmas shopping at Century. Merrill went to Ennis for tractor chains. He backed off driveway there. raining all day. Got letter from Uncle Berl. My electric percolator started leaking.

Ken and Eleanor’s 22nd anniversary. Wrote Freddie in Viet Nam and Uncle Berl. Merrill worked at barn all day. Cold wind. Made 7 pies (apply and pumpkin) Karen Morrow went to hospital by ambulance. Judy Miles Davis had baby boy tonight.

Angie’s birthday. Toby here for breakfast. They took Karen to city hospital in ambulance yesterday. We went to church. Art and Madeline Miles had first grandchild born last night, Eric Michael, 7 lb, 7 oz. Jim and Pat here for supper. Rained and froze on in late evening.

Marilyn and Bob Payne’s 1st anniversary. Very icy here this morning. Jim came home in morning when he got off work. I wasn’t up yet. Did Jim’s wash and some ironing. Merrill got Pat’s car thawed out. Battery dead. Past Grands at Aunt Maude’s. Wrote Vern’s and Karen Morrow in hospital.

Sent order to Spiegel/Christmas. We sent both our life insurance. Sent for car license. Sent $2 to Boy’s Town. Ironed. Started fixing black wool dress over. Merrill went to Theresa for nails. Snow squalls off and on all day. Sky very black at times. Snow and very windy in evening.

Bea’s 51st birthday. Wrote Debbie and Mother T. Received cards and letter from Eleanor, Lyla, Fran S. Eleanor sent items June wrote for church. Snowed about all day. Merrill got me silver cream sugar and tray set for my birthday.

Debby’s 9th birthday. WOTT-FM started on the air at 12 noon today. Dad Tryon died nine years ago today. Pres John Kennedy 5 years ago today. Millicent Hale entered hospital. We went to city. Got new electric percolator $10.95. Jim here for supper. He plans to look at new rooms.

Jim and Gary Pastor here when I got up. Were going hunting. Were on their cycles. We went to church. Ate lunch at Indian River Diner. Spent afternoon with Karen and Toby. Karen got home Tuesday from hospital. Rained hard most of day. We gave $25. toward paint fund at church.

Agway dinner at school. 325 there. Colder but nice day. I went to city shopping. Went to hospital to see Dave. Don and Juanita were there. He can go home Thursday. Jim and Pat here when I got home. Here for supper. Jim and Gary P were up to Barker’s hunting today. Lee Hall here in evening to clean furnace. $6. First time.

Wrote Uncle Berl. Sent Millicent Hale card at Mercy Hospital. Ground covered with 2 inches of snow this morning. Got turkey ready for tomorrow. Merrill put on storm windows for Lula R. Lamphere brought porch flooring. Rebekahs. Not many out. My Secret Pal gave me photo album for my birthday.

Wrapped Christmas gifts in evening. Thanksgiving. Jim and Pat here for dinner. Patty had to go to work at 2 PM. Thunder and lightning in evening. Rained about all day. Dave went home from Hospital. Jim brought us 2 lb box of Whitman’s chocolate.

Sent package to Uncle Berl. 72¢ Flashlight and tie. Lettie pen and praying hands. Mom and I went to city,. She had blood sugar test at hospital. She made bank deposit. I got Merrill winter rubbers. Grocery shopped. Very snowy with wet snow. Wrote Vern’s

4-H officers training school. Jim and Pat here for lunch. Merrill lost filling in tooth in front. Jim brought Mom and I to Vern’s. Very snowy in Oswego. Snowed all forenoon. I took coffee maker back to Century. They gave me another one.

Vern’s appointment with Dr. Maley and committee at University of Maryland 9 AM. Clear and cold. Mom called Florence. Vern and June got home at 9:10 PM. Good trip. Vern has to change proposal. Washed.

Merrill and Bea’s 33rd Anniversary. Merrill went to city Christmas shopping. Got several more Christmas cards. Merrill got bib overalls at Theresa. Rebekah’s Christmas party. Nice time and good turnout.

Homemakers Club at Ruth Eggleston’s. Exchanged 50 cent gift. Played Yatzee. Covered dish. Jim and Pat here for lunch. Brought us a Lava Light for our anniversary. Got $5. check from Dot. Started Christmas cards in evening.

Grace Tryon called in morning. She has been in hospital. She lost a baby girl. Jim and Pat here all afternoon. Pat and I made dipped chocolate. Got package ready to send Dot and Joe (Shirt and pajama bag) Lester Webb died today. Heart attack. Got pictures back.

Joe Powers brought new desk. Merrill’s Christmas present. Merrill’s dentist appointment at 10 AM. We went up to Webb’s in PM. Got Christmas tree at Hills for $3.50. Sent package to Dot and Joe $1.15. PN Grands at Marguerites 6:60, 20 present. I was Leah’s Secret Pal. My new pal is Martha Brown.

I went to city shopping all day. Got playskool desk for Dan $10.00. Bill and Vi here in evening. We made dipped chocolates. Vi never made them before. Wrote Vern’s. Judy and Frank Payne have baby boy, 3 lb, 14 oz Michael.

4-H Christmas party. Debby Hall’s 8 PM. All present but Cathy Ayen. Nice time. I got lots of gifts. W e had cake and ice cream, cookies and candy. Got $5 check from milk plant. Cleaned utility room. Made Christmas cookies and Merrill changed water pipes to large pump. He got hair cut.

Sent Donna birthday card. Wrote Mom letter. Got stuff ready for our family Christmas. Wrapped rest of Christmas gifts. Merrill and I went to city to finish shopping. He got me a beautiful chair to go with my desk. Saw Dorothy LaClair

Donna’s 25th birthday. We had our Christmas with Vern’s. Gave Merrill barn scraper. Me towels and refrigerator plastic set. Jim car waxing shirt [?] and Patty dessert flower set. We gave June 2 blouses and [?] dish. Vern clock and shirt. Steve, bike and Danny, playskool desk. Vern’s left about 4 PM and Jim and Patty left same time. Nice day together.

Jim and Pat here for supper and tree. Toby and Karen here same time. They gave us thermal blanket. Jim’s gave me blender. They gave Merrill 4 shirts, vest, and 3 pair socks. Howard got tractor mower for kids. Had it set up in our garage. Cold and slippery. We ate by candle light. Nice day. Astronauts got out of moon orbit. Pueblo crew with families.

10° below zero. Sunshine all day. Merrill and I went to Mom’s for Christmas. Jim came in PM. Patty had to go to work at 2 PM. A very nice dinner. Mom gave us money. Don’s cologne and after shave lotion. Snowy at Adams Center coming home.

We didn’t go to church. Couldn’t get around in time. Snowed about all night. Driveways full again. Joshua Gurtering [?] died yesterday. Royal’s father. Beautiful day and evening but below zero in evening.

12 below at 7:30 AM. Wrote Dot and Uncle Berl. Sent them pictures to look at. Sent my subscription to World Outlook and Response. Sent sympathy card to Martin Hagan family. I put contact paper on our bedroom furniture. Jim and Jim D here for supper. Jim D is on crutches. Did Jim’s wash in evening.
