Diary Entry for 5/1/1999

Sunny and warm. 73° Great. May Day. Great Day. I need the screens off. I put screen on back door. Great to have air in house. I put furniture on back patio. I got letter and pictures from Elgin. He sent pictures of my great grandmother Elizabeth Gallagher Haggerty in Maple Ridge Cemetery near Winchester Canada. Also David Haggerty.

Diary Entry for 5/2/1999

A sunny warm day. We went to church. A big turnout. A missionary guest speaker and communion. Merrill went over to Linda’s. I thought he was back of garage. Linda and Rick brought him home. Jim called in evening. He and Nancy spent yesterday and today at Nancy’s sister in Canastota. Three American soldier prisoners freed in Yugoslavia due to pleas of Rev. Jessie Jackson. Jeanette Cobb wants to visit us next Saturday. She told Jim about her brother-in-law knowing Vernon.

Nice day. Partly cloudy in PM. Merrill went to day care. Denise not here. Dr. Powell at 9:30 AM. Vern and June here to take me. Here before Merrill left. I’m to have my knee operated on June 17th. (Mom’s birthday) I had blood work done at hospital. I took Vern and June out to lunch to Schulars’ Restaurant. Vern went over to Middle School to observe cadet teacher. June and I had great visit. I gave her and Vern Vern’s first day of school picture. June and Vern would like our first bedroom suit up stairs. Vern was born in that bed on Barker Farm 9/21/36. We bought it at Kamargo’s just before we married. Vi called. They buried Martha’s ashes at Sanford Corner’s Cemetery Sunday. Juanita called from Crystals.

Partly cloudy. Some rain. I washed clothes. Lyla called in morning. Merrill very quiet most of the day. He didn’t go outside until almost bedtime. Jim called in evening. He will mow lawn Saturday. Terrible tornados in Kansas and Oklahoma. 43 people killed.

Cloudy. Merrill went to day care. Denise here to help. We had a great time getting him up but he made it. Denise took my recyclables. Lyla called to say she was going into Carthage Hospital to receive three units of blood at 2 PM today. Her CAT scan okay. Linda B mowed our lawns. I gave her $20. I called Jim to tell him Linda mowed lawn so he wouldn’t come out to do it. I called Rev Jane about Lyla. Our new neighbors across road looking the place over. 3 children with them. Will be good to have kids there again. I called and changed eye appointment to June 9th.

Still partly cloudy but no rain. Lyla’s operation. All went well. I called Kathy. Rev. Jane called Cheryl. I wrote Jolie, Zack and Shawn Michael. I sent Shawn angel letter and $5. Care givers called and said Denise’s car has quit so she can’t come to clean.

Partly cloudy day. Windy. Merrill went to day care. Kathy Hicks here to help. Vern visited student at middle school. June came with him. She took me to bank and Big M store. Vern put on window screens and put inside locks on outside doors and fixed rocking chair. Vern and June brought me very pretty lavender 2 piece slack outfit for Mother’s day. Chad Dudley here in PM. Vern and June met him. I got Lyla pretty pink rose plant at store. I called Kathy to take it to her tomorrow. I got letter from Jolie and army family that used to be at Fort Drum. They are at Fort Lewis. They were here. I forgot husband’s name. He was in Egypt with Zack. Judy here. She forgot to come yesterday to cut Merrill’s hair.

Diary Entry for 5/8/1999

Finally raining this morning. Windy. Power off 3 hours for repair. 11 PM to 3 AM. Kathy here to get plant for Lyla. Food drive with mail man. Alice F called to say Roger Hall’s wife has had stroke in Maryland. One side paralyzed and she can’t see. She’s 34. Jim called to say they are on the way. A great day together with Jeanette Cobb and her granddaughter Whitney, 8 years old. We had so much catching up to do. She is Leslie’s oldest daughter. Nancy sent me a supply of hair curlers. Jeanette’s mother was June Rolf. She and Leslie never married as he was already married. I believe her name was Lyla Rickett. Jeanette says Lyla died in an asylum. We never knew that.

Raining, colder and cloudy. We went to church 103 there. Camp service. Julie Latt from Camp Aldersgate. Interesting. Mother’s given potted plant. Jim and Nancy here in PM. Brought me beautiful hanging plant and card. Also my pills from drug store. Sue Lucida called. We had a nice visit. Vern called in evening. Merrill was on tear so was hard to talk. I called Kathy, Lyla in room 121. She’s doing okay. Still has hose in her nose to her stomach.

Sunny and cool. Merrill went to day care. Denise not able to come. I washed white clothes. Alice Flaherty called. She says Everett and Sandra Carpenter are buying Kay Petried house up here on 29. Jolie called. Jim got an 800 number for me so she wouldn’t have to pay so much to talk to me. This was her first call to me. I called Lyla at Carthage Hospital. Room 121 in PM. She is still living on ice chips. She had 2 X-rays today. Vivian was over. She brought in my mail. I got Mother’s day card from Jolie.

Sunny. Still cool. Tina didn’t come. Merrill has been in the house all day but he went out to mailboxes to get mail and paper. Nary Chamberlin called to ask if I planned to go to Rebekah’s tomorrow.

Sunny, but very cool in morning. Merrill went to day care. Denise didn’t come to help. I washed Merrill’s dark clothes. Rebekah’s. DDP Bethany Merouth made official visit. Good to see her again.

Still cold but real bright sun. I sent Patty and Ashley birthday cards today. Sent Ashley $5. Care givers called. They are hoping to find someone to clean today. Denise will get her car going tonight. I called Lyla in Carthage Hospital. She is going to Cheryl’s tomorrow. She went to hospital a week ago Wednesday and had her operation (Colon) on Thursday. Dr. Powell’s office called with my schedule for blood building shots. 3 shots of Procrit.

Diary Entry for 5/15/1999

Much warmer. Great. Sunny. I washed some of Merrill’s clothes. Dried them outside. Jim came out at supper time and mowed the lawns. They look so great. He worked up a garden spot for Merrill and then borrowed our Rota tiller to work a garden spot for Jill. Nancy is in Rochester to conference. Jim went to Ashley’s birthday party. He was mowing Renee’s lawn. Lyla called fro Cheryl’s. She’s doing pretty good and glad to be out of the hospital.

Nice sunny day. We didn’t go to church. My knee very sore. I washed outside on the lawn too much yesterday. I called Wayne. The youth confirmation class in charge of the church service. I’m sorry we had to miss it. Merrill very upset in evening. He made several trips to the mailbox looking for mail He found a screwdriver and would have wrecked Vern’s new locks, so I let him outside. He does just as he wants to do. Pays no attention to me at all today. He hasn’t been near the garden Jim worked up for him. Jolie called in evening. Talked with Shawn Michael. He like his school and teacher, Mrs. Long. He asked if King was at Ashley’s birthday party.

Sunny. Merrill went to day care. Denise here in morning to help. I washed white clothes. The smell of lilacs all through the house through open windows and doors. Tina called. She forgot she was supposed to come last Tuesday. She will be here tomorrow. Jill and Jim’s 3rd marriage ceremony Philadelphia anniversary. Looks like their marriage is over. They were married in Los Vegas Nevada March 23, 1996.

Sunny. Windy, very warm. Tina here. Made plans for short term nursing home for Merrill while I’m in hospital for my knee. Tina is doing DRI on Merrill’s update. Lisa Brown called with date for interview on Wednesday May 26th at Genesis. Merrill hoed in garden. Rev. Jane called in PM. She went to hospital to see me thinking my operation was May 17 instead of June 17th. The small spirea bush by the steps has blossoms on it this early.

Raining. Rained during night. Badly needed. Merrill went to day care. Denise here to help. He fought getting up until the last minute. I called Juanita but she was at the dentist. I talked with David. I called her back at 4:30. She is disappointed she can’t stay with Merrill. She will come when I get home. Chad Dudley here. Good to discuss affairs with him about Merrill’s care. Lyla called. She got good report from Dr. Hahn today. Told her he got all her colon cancer. No chemo or radiation treatment. Merrill’s bus driver said he used to ride motorcycle with Jim.

A sunny day. Warm. Merrill went to day care. Denise here this morning. I talked with Loraine Picket this morning. Lisa Brown from Genesis called. She said she has all the paper work done and Merrill qualifies for a bed in the nursing home. They have one for him now if he wants it. I called Lyla. She’s doing okay. She has some drainage. More bomb scares at several school. Some kids have got caught and expelled from school. Their parents may be charged damages. Vern called at supper time. He was checking on my appointments.

Another great day. I washed Merrill’s bed linens. Trises’s had second day of garage sales. Lots of cars. Jolie and Shawn Michael called. Good to hear from them. Zack broke his right big toe playing soccer. Esther Lawler’s son Pat died last week. He was 44 and had cystic fibrosis.

Partly cloudy but nice. We went to church. Wayne came for us and brought us home. 123 in church. 17 people joined the church. Some through confirmation. Some transferred here and some just joined. Great to see so many at once. Rev. Jane is doing so much. Sue Boschock said she’d pick up our pills at Bolton’s. Clark brought us pot road diners from Pamelia firemen. Good. Merrill is upset this PM. It seems to upset him to go to church for some reason but he loves seeing the folks.

Raining. Merrill went to day care. He got up in a good mood the first time I called him. Denise here to help. Sue Boschock got Merrill’s and my pills at Bolton’s on her way home. She stopped by with them. Bob gets home today. I called Vivian. She will take me to city on Wednesday.

Rained most of night. Much cooler 50°. Vivian called me about riding tomorrow. I called Diane, Vi, and Lyla. Vi said Margaret told her that Stuart Haggerty is quitting farming. He has a girl friend they say. Sue, her mother, and Ashley here after Ashley got out of school. It was Sue’s mother’s birthday. Daryl Barlow. Sue took her out to eat. Jolie called in PM to say they are having a baby girl. She called her dad, then her mother and then me. Zack wanted a boy but everyone else happy it’s a girl. Patty wants her named Colleen.

Diary Entry for 5/26/1999

Blood shot Procrit. Dr. Powell 10:30. A shot in each arm. Started on iron pills given by Dr. Powell’s office. Clark and Vivian took me to city. I went to Vi’s and went to Carriage House with her. She has a nice home with Susie and Chuck. Ten of us Rebekah’s went to Carriage House for lunch. A good lunch. I had lasagna. We paid for lunch. Merrill went to day care. Denise here. Vivian brought over my iron capsules she brought home for me from doctors. Jolie called at supper time. Said it was 80° there. She said Jim was having money problems His tenants aren’t paying their rent.

Diary Entry for 5/27/1999

Cold wind. Sunny. Up to 54°. Denise here to clean. Jim called in forenoon. No school bombs today. He got his money affairs all settled. I told him he should sell our car. It isn’t doing any good sitting in our garage. He paid for it four years ago. He’s coming this weekend to mow our lawns. My knee very sore today. Too much walking yesterday. Care givers called after 10 PM to say Denise wouldn’t be coming in the morning.

A great sunny, warm day. Merrill went to day care. Denise ill so didn’t come this morning. I washed clothes and Merrill’s shirts and coats. I burned trash and took garbage to gar age. I took large turkey out of freezer to thaw in refrigerator. Vern called in evening. They are coming tomorrow. We’ll get plants for cemetery.

Diary Entry for 5/29/1999

A great summer day. 80°. I sent $10 to sheriff’s snow fund. Rick took my trash to dump. Linda mowed lawns, raked grass and drew it away. Vern mowed some with our lawn mower but it didn’t run right. Stalled. It hasn’t been used for a couple of years. Vern and June got here about 10:30 AM. They got plants for cemetery and Merrill some (six) yellow tomato plants. He picks the red ones before they are ready to eat. Vern planted cukes and set out plants. We went to Calcium cemetery. It feels so good to have this done. Our kids are so good. Jim came out with his mower. He was doing lawns and would have done ours. He left to do Jill’s. June brought everything for lunch. So good. We got a letter from Jolie. June read it to me as it was on yellow paper. She writes a good letter. Vern and June brought in some rhubarb for me. I cooked some and froze some.

Diary Entry for 5/30/1999

Great weather. 81° high. 54° low. We went to church. 76 out. Wayne came after us. I gave Sue $15 to get things for 2 kits to send to Kasaco (?) people. Our church is packing then Tuesday evening. Mary Hall will take me to Watertown Friday. Doris H said Abby’s middle son was found dear in his bed Wednesday (Rocky Moyer 40). His father Bob dies the same way. He was young also. I called Lyla to tell her. She wasn’t feeling as good. Jolie called as we were going to bed 10:15. They had out to eat at Charles Uncles. Then they went to a neighbor’s birthday party. They are having fun looking for girl baby furniture. Merrill let me clip his toenails so he won’t have to keep his appointment with Dr. Piellitier June 8th.

Sunny hot 82° Got down electric fan. I called Juanita but she had gone to a craft show with Christine Shelmadine. Talked with David. We ate picnic lunch on side porch. Alice Flaherty’s 89th birthday. Merrill had a read bad day. He is much better with people around.
