Diary Entry for 4/1/2000

Partly cloudy. Some sun. I called Jim in morning. He is working today and tomorrow so can’t move some of my stuff. The power was off from 9:30 AM until 3:15 PM to make repairs. I cleaned out freezer and washed it and shut it off. I’ve had a busy day to keep warm. Got a lot done. I called Irene Foley at Centennial. We worked at the Olga years ago when I did. Lyla called. Also Margaret K.

Diary Entry for 4/2/2000

Daylight saving time starts. Raining all day. I went to church and Sunday school. 69 in church. Margaret came after me and brought me home. I spent PM reading Jim’s scrapbook of newspaper clippings. I have kept them for him on this police career. Brought back many memories. Vern called in late PM. They had good weekend.

Cloudy some showers. I washed clothes 56°. Vern and June here with papers for me to sign. Vern made out some I had here. I called phone company. My new number at Centennial will be 782-6004 to be turned o Friday. $10 plus tax charge. Vi called to say Susie had her baby girl Saturday, April 1st. I talked with Lyla. Jolie called in evening. I talked with Carla and Shawn Michael. Carla and Michael are there this week.

Rained about all day. Amy here to clean. She went to store for me. Lyla took me to city. We put up curtains in apartment. We visited Marion in her apartment. We stopped at Amish store and I left change of address at post office..

Diary Entry for 4/7/2000

Cloudy in AM. But sun out in PM. Jim and Walt prow came out and moved most of my furniture to my new apartment. Three loads on Jim’s truck. I went on first load. I got to bed a midnight. I kept finding things to do. I slept upstairs as they moved my bedroom stuff. Vern called in evening. I mailed check to Philadelphia fuels and letters to Gloria and Charlotte McG.

Diary Entry for 4/8/2000

Rained most of night and all day long. Started snowing about 4 PM. Everything covered by early evening. Vern, June and Steve, Nancy and Jim came to Philadelphia and moved a lot of things. Steve, Vern and I went back for more. We ate lunch in new place. The girls got a lot settled. Nancy washed dishes. They left about 4 PM. My first night in my new home. I feel close to Merrill but wish he could be here with me. I can’t wait until he get next door. Today is the anniversary of his parents marriage. Also Marie’s birthday.

Everything covered with snow and still snowing hard most of day. Vern and June came again today. We got rest of things at Philadelphia. Vern put up pictures and mirrors. They put Boston fern in new pot and soil. My new home is looking so great. Thanks to all the help the kids have given me. Lyla called. Also Jolie. My back is hurting so much and I’m so tired but we have so very much done. The kids left about 4 PM.

Cold wind. Snow starting to disappear some. I made phone calls to nutritional center, Times, Social Services. Lyla called in morning. We talked twice after that. Juanita called in evening. She can call here free but it is long distance for me to call her. Mannsville Phone – Lorraine. Ken and Esther here in PM. I’m so glad they came. Jim here for empty boxes. He called a few times. I’m ready for bed tonight but it has been a good day. I sleep well. They put in a new kitchen light for me.

Partly cloudy. Cold wind. Margaret K called in morning. Virginia Pastor called on me. She’s nice. Bill did repairs needed. He even glued my disk veneer that was coming unglued. Paper boy, Josh, delivered Times for first time here. Jim took me to Philadelphia to check house and get a few things. Nancy met us there. We went to see Merrill on way back. He wasn’t very alert. He didn’t open his eyes.

A nice day. Snow about all gone again. Merion C brought me delicious cookies this morning. Cheryl brought me lasagna, Italian bread, and pecan pie for supper. Sure good. I met Lydia Sovia and Mrs. Robinson. Folks are very friendly here. I got off some change of address notices. Also called caregivers. They called back to say Judy would be coming to clean tomorrow at 11 AM. I called Doris H. Vi called. They named the baby Allison Marla.

Sunny. Jim stopped by in morning. He had been to Samaritan Keep. They will be moving Merrill there. Judy Hutton here to clean. She washed my shower curtains for me. I called Alice Flaherty. She wasn’t feeling good today. Marion C Cheryl A and I went to fellowship room to hear “Celebration Singers”. They are still great. It has been years since I’ve heard them.

A nice day. In the 40’s. Lyla and Marge Powell came to see me. We all went up to Cheryl’s for a delicious lunch. I put my diaries in the TV cabinet. A good place for them. I’m slowly getting rid of all the boxes. I like my ne home very much. Everyone tells me how nice it is.

Cloudy. I called Elgin in morning. Also Jim and Lyla. I rode back to Philadelphia with Lyla and Kathy and twins. Did my washing out there. Got quite a lot done there. Lyla helped. Kathy and David came after brown chair for Lyla. Lyla took me to eat at Philadelphia Restaurant. Jim came out and got me. He helped me get rid of my trash. Jolie called.

Much cooler. I watched the Crystal Cathedral church service in TV. Vern and June came about 1 PM. They took me out to eat to the Cracker Barrel. Very nice. We went to see Merrill. He was pretty good. Glad to see us. All smiles. June brought me white blouse and jackets. Jim here this morning. He brought me sweet pictures of Mattie. He had breakfast and read my papers.

A cold wind. A man was here from hospital to hook up my Life Line. I got welcome to new home card from Lyla. I talked with her later on the phone. I met Grace Bennett in the hall. Juanita called in PM.

Cloudy some rain. I washed dishes and put them in cupboard. My hip and back hurting. Jim and Nancy here in evening. Jim brought me papers to fill out for Para transit bus service. I sent green glass dish and six sauce dishes home to Jill.

mostly cloudy day. Juanita called about 8 AM. I talked with Lyla. Wayne and Nancy Huntress called. We had a real nice visit. Wayne is writing my article for the church newsletter. Jim and Nancy here in evening to take me to Crosby’s Super Duper in plaza for groceries. He brought copies of Merrill’s income papers he copied for us for Department of Social Services.

Cloudy day. Judy here to clean from 9:30 – 11:30. Kathryn Clark, head nurse, 3rd floor Genesis called. Dr. Fish says Merrill still has lung infection. They have made appointment for a CAT scan for him Tuesday, April 25 at 9 AM at Samaritan Hospital. Nurse Linda Scanlon has gone to work for Dr. Fish. Lawyer Gebo sent my house deed in just my name. I met Rose A Rose. She lives in apartment by other front door. Jim here. He brought me nice laundry cart. Lyla called. She was almost robbed yesterday by the Medicine Shoppe deliveryman of $40. She caught him taking it out of her purse.

Our Easter day celebration together in my new apartment. Sixteen here. A just grand time together I wish Merrill could have been here. Vern, Jim, Steve, Dan and I went to see him but he wasn’t very alert. Vern and June, Steve and Kathy, Kristen, and Sarah, Dan and Robin, Lydia and Jordan, Jim and Nancy, Jill and Darrell, and Dillon and me here. They all brought delicious food. My apartment feels like home now. A rainy day outside. We went to visit Merrill at Genesis in afternoon.

I miss not being able to go to church today. Last year Merrill and I went to church together. Vernon called about 2 PM. Dan and Robin and kids got started for home a short time before then. I visited Lidia awhile. Jim stopped in. He’d been to Nancy’s for dinner. He put up a thermometer on my window. I’m tired today but it is a good tired. Yesterday was so great.

Sunny. Merrill’s CAT scan at Samaritan Hospital 9:30 AM. Jim picked me up and took me over. He had eye appointment for field tests. Merrill behaved very well. My eyes bad from the glare today. Very sunny. Jim brought music box that Jolie ordered for me. Grandpa and Grandma. Jolie called in evening. She works six days a week in tanning parlor. Esther Taylor called me about Rebekah’s tomorrow.

Sunny day. Cold wind. I went to Rebekah’s with Esther T and Vi M. Eight of us there. Nice meeting. Jim here in evening. He told me he had handed in his 30 day notice to retire today. Came as quite a surprise after 32 years, 4 months. It will be a big change for him. Both our sons retiring this year after long careers in their fields. I’m so proud of them.

Partly cloudy. Jessie Pitcher here to clean. We went to laundry room for first time here. Cost me $1. They have 5 washers and 4 dryers. Maytags. Jim here in evening. He is all finished at Police station. He is using accumulated time for 30 days. Jim stopped to see his dad. Merrill was sleepy. I called Vern and June in evening. No news about house price yet. They were surprised to hear Jim had retired.

A real nice day. Sunny Warm 57°. I ironed table linens and napkins. The Philadelphia UM Church Newsletter, “The Cross and the Flame” came today. Wayne H has my interview with him in it. Merrill would enjoy it.

A great day. Sunny. Warm. There is a public Granny’s Attic sale here at Centennial today. 8-3. Cheryl has a table of her ceramics to sell. I bought a house magnet. I saw Betty Hull for first time here. I talked with Lyla. She is coming out after me tomorrow. Jim said he’d come after me. He worked his “heart walk” today. I got note and pictures of Lydia and Jordan from Dan and Robin. So cute.

Sunny. Cold wind. Lyla came after me at 10 AM. I went to Sunday school and church. 60 at church and 41 at Sunday school. Lyla and I ate lunch at Philadelphia Restaurant. I spent afternoon working at the house. The Brenda Rathburn has her for sale sign out front. Jim came to Philadelphia for me. We stopped to see Merrill on way home. He was quite mixed up. Juanita called. Also Lyla.
