Diary Entry for 10/4/1983

Merrill finished putting on storm windows. Rained some during the night. We went to city in AM. Got new phone at Nichols. Got plastic table cloth for dining room. June R here in evening. Paid us 2 farm payments.

We had a 5.2 earthquake at 6:20 AM. No damage. Wrote Vern’s. Merrill helped load Sunday School papers. I called folks for food for Bell family who lost baby. Merlin Shorkey brought over quart of mayonnaise in evening so I could make potato salad.

Took sunday School papers to Carthage, 4 ton. Town truck took them. Lloyd Dellis drove. Wrote Uncle Berl and sent him quake news clipping. Judy and Jane took food to Bell family. Merrill went down to June’s in PM to work on barn cleaner. Got card from June.

Merrill went to Sunday School and church, 55 out. I was dizzy with upset stomach so stayed home. Nice day but cool. Ginny stopped in on way to lodge practice. Merrill went over to Cooper’s for papers

Columbus Day holiday. First hard white frost this season last night. Patty and kids here. Jim on bike in mountains. Donut day for church choir. Patty, Jean, and I got 5 dozen. Got times but no mail. Rebekah’s Assembly President at Philadelphia, 86 present. I didn’t go.

Lila Ashley’s birthday. Don Gehm’ had cataract operation in Florida. There was another earthquake at 12 AM. 3.8 on scale. Merrill cut his finger bad. We took phone back to city. Merrill and Bill went to funeral home for Rose Melrose. I went to pension meeting at Asbury Church with Rev.Salisbury. Vern & June there. World Series starts. Philadelphia Philly’s, Baltimore Orioles

Merrill worked at Horton’s in PM. A beautiful day. Merrill washed car. I washed Merrill’s work clothes. Nominating Committee meeting at parsonage. Doris brought Uncle Len for a visit He spent night. Merrill and Uncle Len went to Aunt Maude’s in the evening.

Colder and windy. Merrill took Uncle Len to Art’s in morning. I got groceries. Merrill went to Horton’s at 10 AM to draw corn. They didn’t work at it because of rain and wind. Hailed some. Pauline and Garmon Roggie’s 40th anniversary.

Doris Haggerty’s birthday. Merrill put new glass in window at CEC. He worked at Horton’s in PM. I washed white clothes. A nice day but cold. Barbara and Kevin Drake bought Preston’s house this week. Cathy Par (?) went to hospital by ambulance. Break down.

40th anniversary party for Garmon and Pauline at Lowville. We went. Aunt Maude went with us. We went to Sunday School and church. Rev. Sabin, Clayton, preached. Rev. Salisbury at Clayton. 37 out. Nice day but cold. Baltimore Orioles won series over Philadelphia Philly’s.

Nice day. Washed. Merrill went to Wilson’s and over town. He fixed parsonage door and put in cellar window. He worked at Horton’s in PM. Evelyn and Howard Hall called. They want Merrill to plow for them.

Rev. Salisbury on vacation. Fort Drum chaplain, Burger preached, 33 out. We went to Sunday school and church. Steve also. John Shorkey picked Steve up at 6 PM to go back to Potsdam. A lazy day. 167 Marines killed over nigh in Burut. Bombed.

Raining in morning. Merrill went to Hall’s in PM but they were all away. He stopped at June’s. He put wood down cellar. Cindy M here with Avon. I got my birthstone earrings from her. I called Keith Rudes about TV.

Steve’s 19th birthday. Marty Paro’s 14th birthday. Wrote Melba and Elmer. Merrill left at 8 AM to plow Hall’s. Got home at 5:30. Marty, his aunt, and cousin here. Ordered calendar from Darcy. Washed clothes. I called Mrs.K. Hall at Mills. Got note from Pauline R.

Diary Entry for 10/27/1983

Sent order to Wards for navy nylon coat for Merrill, $43.66. Robbins boys cleaned furnace. Snow at Canton this morning. Wrote letter to Times about Today Show. We had meeting on pension and finance committee meeting. 8 present at parsonage.

Merrill worked at Hall’s all day. Windy but nice. Robbins men came after tools they left here and at parsonage. Keith Rudes came for TV. Kathy and boys got home to stay. Gone two weeks tomorrow. Our leaves fell and blew away.
