Diary Entry for 9/1/1968

New WSCS year begins. Beautiful day. We went to Bill and Vi’s trailer at Jaques Carter State Park for picnic dinner. Lovely there. John, Martha, and Jeff there also. Martha and two girls came in PM to Vi’s. Jim here in PM while we were gone.

Diary Entry for 9/2/1968

Jim’s 25th birthday. Larry Hutchinson’s birthday also. Labor day also. Lazy day. I dyed our bedspread and rugs blue. Rained about 3 PM. Jim was here for supper. Gave him birthday gift of robe and pj’s. Cleaned. Jim’s roommates moved today.

Cactus blossomed in evening. WSCS here. 29 present. Larry H showed slides of Viet Nam. Merrill and I went to Syracuse for machine parts. Got chain for Merrill’s spreader. Jean and Gary Pastor here in evening on cycles. Rained in AM. Marge Shepherd called to say Gladys and Ted are moving to Dexter from Syracuse. Wrote Vern’s.

School starts. Merrill finished Howard’s oats. Merrill put machinery away. Beautiful day, 75°. Jim here in PM to get my vacuum cleaner. Aunt Maude and Helen Keichels called. Sent for radio to Spiegel.

Allan Lanto [?] 40, was killed in accident at Massena milk plant. Merrill built fence back on meadow. Helen Keichel and I went to 4-H meeting at city on records. Leaders to see to them now. Got card from kids from Canada. They spent the weekend at Thurstonia Lodge.

Sent $12 to Time. Pays to October 21, 1969. Merrill got chopper out and ready to use. Rainy all day. Washed Merrill’s clothes. I went to lodge. First fall meeting. Donna here in evening. She will be my assistant 4-H Leader.

Sunny day. We went to city and Fays. Saw Orin and Mildred Walts. Mildred has hurt her neck again. Mrs. Eva Kelsey from Redwood here with Amway products. Called Mom. Merrill got new work shoes at Theresa, $8. Jim got service discharge certificate in mail. Thunder storm in evening.

Diary Entry for 9/13/1968

Friday the 13th. Rebekahs State Pres. made official visit at Alex Bay. 10 from Philadelphia went. Leah, Martha, went to dinner also. Francis Ansted and staff looked nice. Alice LaClair went with me. Elizabeth Dunlop, Buffalo, is Pres. We mowed lawns. Jim here for supper. Wrote to Uncle Berl about Mrs. Claude Mount, 80. Funeral was yesterday.

Cactus plant blossomed in evening for second time in 11 days. Canned peaches. Jim and Patty Puffer here on cycle. Here for supper. Toby, Karen and one of her pupils here in PM. Men put up silo pipe. Boys took Star out doors. Jim Matteson here in evening. He and Toby are going to milk for us. Called Wolcott. Less called to ask us to go to Elmer’s.

We went to Wolcott for day. Had dinner at Elmer’s. Stopped at Mother’s. Didn’t see Leslie or Beula as she was working. Les at clambake. Stopped at Vernon’s. Vern finished paining house and June was canning tomatoes. Jim Matteson and Toby M did milking. We got home about 11:45 PM

We started using flag Ken’s gave us. Took our old one to Vern’s. Started chopping corn. Toby here all day long to help. A day of his vacation. I went to Past Grands at Vivian’s Myers. Very foggy coming home. 80° during day.

I got new radio from Spiegel, $35. Enjoyed evening listening to Short Wave. Merrill chopped two loads of corn. Foggy in evening again. Washed clothes, cleaned. Mr. & Mrs. Gary Pastor had baby girl, Laura Lynn, today. Hot, 83°

4-H leaders meeting at city. Donna and I went to it. Saw Jim and Al Hurst on duty. Jim worked his days off. Very warm. 88°. Lila went to hospital. Started cleaning bathroom. Hot again today. Merrill finished corn across road.

Changed 4-H name to Ore Bed 4-H Club. Sent Reader’s Digest Christmas gifts, Hall’s, Vern’s, Jim, and us. Sent Vern card and letter for his birthday. I went to city for groceries. Merrill chopped corn. Jim and Mike here in PM. 4-H here in evening. Dennis and Kevin Demo joined

80°. I mowed two lawns. Merrill filled silo. Jim and Patty here in evening on way to drive-in. Donna H here. Subscribed for Good Housekeeping magazine for June. Merrill went to milk meeting. They all voted to sell Philadelphia milk plant. Washed and ironed in evening.

Rebekahs election of officers. Alice LaClair NG, Mary Hall VG, I’m tres. Washed woodwork in bathroom. Merrill went to Lampheres. Ordered lumber for cleaner shed and shingles for barn back. Mr. Clark stopped here. Raining in morning. Nice in PM and evening. Paid school tax $225.38

Cloudy. I went to city shopping and for groceries. Got black slacks and girdle. Merrill chopped corn. One small load left yet to do . Sun shinning in PM. I worked on 4-H reports all evening. Donna here in evening.
