Diary Entry for 5/1/1998

Sunny in AM. Very warm 73° Merrill went to day care. Lyla came after me and took my to see her new apartment at Chase Manor. Very nice. Cozy as a bug in a rug. She loves it. She took me for groceries afterwards. Robert Congdon called. They are coming tomorrow.

Rain showers off and on all day. Robert, Cheryl, and Breanne Congdon here in PM. Good to see them. Merrill cried when they left. Bob looks so much like his dad, Glenn. It is 112 miles here from their place in Savannah. It was good to see them. Jim called in evening.

Cloudy and rainy. Warm. Merrill went to day care. I washed both white and dark clothes. Dried them in dryer. My arthritis hurting this damp weather. I sent for 2 pair of pants and pedal pushers to Blairs $19.90. Jim and Sue here for supper. He brought me a new belt for my cleaner. He put it on for me. They took us for gas and to grocery store. Vivian was over. She picked my asparagus for me. She also brought my mail.

Another cloudy warm day. Some sun. Kristen’s 7th birthday. I sent checks to Lawyer Gebo, Sears (cleaner) and cable. Chad Dudley here in PM. It is the first time he has met Merrill. Merrill talked every minute to him about cutting corn, wood, etc. Pauline R called in evening. She is at her home. Her eye doing pretty good. She had Dr. Holman.

Raining in morning. Merrill went to day care. I put on door screens. Also put out porch furniture. Joyce Griffin brought lunches today. She retired last Friday from many years at Black Clawson. Shirley L called in evening.

A just beautiful day. 75°. We got breakfast room window open and the screen on it. It’s so great to have fresh air through house. Kathy here to clean. I called Lyla. She will take me to eye doctor tomorrow.

Merrill went to day care. Eye center 9 AM. Lyla took me. We shopped some. I got Merrill underwear and gray pants to Kmart. Lyla not feel too good. It rained hard in PM. Jolie called from work. Elgin and Carmi called in evening. They are coming next Saturday, May 16th. I got Mother’s Day cards from Patty and Darcie, John and Brent.

Cloudy. No sun. Vern called in morning. He’s coming tomorrow to take us out to eat. I called Jim in PM at work. He came out in evening 6 PM with mower outfit and mowed our lawns. He sharpened mower blades. The lawns look great. Took him just an hour. I called Lyla. She’s feeling better today. She was going out for bullhead fish supper tonight.

Raining about all day. We went to church. We filled out questioner about church wishes. Wayne came after us. Vern, June, Jim, Sue and Sue’s mother, Merrill and I went down to Philadelphia Restaurant for a prime rib dinner. Very good. Jill was here when we got home from church. She brought me nice card. Jim brought me his usual huge card. Juanita called in PM. Jolie, Zack, and Shawn Michael here in evening after Jolie got out of work. They brought me sweet cards and a pair of Red Cross sandals. Jolie, Shawn Michael and I talked with Patty.

Dr. Sanni 7:15. My left eye pressure 12. Right eye 17. I’m not to use any drops in left eye. Jim took Merrill and I to city. Merrill went to day care. I washed white clothes. I’m to see Dr. Richmond in 2 weeks for eye pressure.

Cloudy in morning. Sunny and warm in PM. Tina here. Merrill’s heart beat low. We washed the car. Merrill washed most of it. I washed the windows. We had a pizza for supper. Got it at church from camp kids.

A beautiful summer day. Jolie called from work. Merrill didn’t go to day care. Don was buried in Lyman Cemetery. His farm all the way around him. Lyla took us in our car. Quite a few there. We went to Juanita’s afterwards. Had coffee and donuts. Dorland and Pat there. Juanita went up north with them. We stopped at Pharmhouse on way home. I put new license sticker on car windshield.

Another great summer day. 72°. My arthritis aches terrible today. I sent Ashley birthday card and $5.00. I forgot to send Patty a card. Norma here to clean. She went to store for me. The house looks nice and clean. Merrill planted cucumbers and string beans. He will probably hoe it all up tomorrow. The “punkies” are real bad today.

Diary Entry for 5/16/1998

A very hot day. 86° One degree off a record. Elgin and Carmine got here about 10 AM. They left home at 7:30. They stopped along the way. We went up across Fort Drum to mills. We got Kentucky Fried Chicken and potatoes for picnic. Elgin brought cheese. I made potato salad and carrot cake. Took Pepsi and 7 UP. We had lunch at the nice rest stop on 81. Then we went to Ken’s flea market. They had a good crowd. Hillary and Joshua there. I talked with June and Vern. Oswego College graduation today. Elgin and Carmi left for home about 5 PM. Elgin has a pretty 1998 new red Plymouth car. We had a nice day together. I got tan summer slacks and striped pedal pushers from Blair. Nice.

Not as hot today. Windy. We went to church 44 out. Wayne came after us. He announced that our new pastor would be Jane Wagner. She will be doing ¾ pastorate at Philadelphia and Evans Mills. Merrill planted cucumbers and string beans. Jill and Jim Mefford’s 2nd anniversary of their Philadelphia vows. Vi called in evening. She and Martha had good vacation in South Carolina. Jim called on way home. He worked the Adams Car sale 4 days. Sue’s sister is here from Hawaii.

Cooler today. Sunny. Merrill went to day care. I washed clothes. Jolie stopped by. She had taken Shawn Michael to school at Antwerp after his dentist appointment. Jim came out in AM and mowed our lawns. They look great. I talked with Lyla.

Another nice day. We washed dining room woodwork and curtains. Good to have them clean again. I confirmed my appointment with Dr. LaPoint, May 27 and changed Merrill’s appointment with Dr. Mirga (?) to June 22nd . I sent letter to Beverly Macklin Kimber. I froze 1 pkg. asparagus. Also stewed some rhubarb.

Sunny but cool. Hospital pre op appointment 11:30 AM. Lyla took me to city. It was 1:30 PM when I got finished. I didn’t have EKG and chest X-ray. Merrill went to day care. We stopped at Pharmhouse. We ordered food from Burger King and ate in car. Also went to dollar store.

Nice day but cool wind. Donna gave me perm today. Jolie, Zack, Carla, Michael and Shawn Michael came out to stay with Merrill. Zack, Merrill and I took trash to dump, then to Donna’s. Merrill got upset so he and Zack came after me early. Donna gave him seeds and tomato plants. Gave me tablecloth. We went to Jolie and Zack’s for cook out in evening. They brought us home. Merrill upset all day. He had real bad night last night. Zack put new rope on flag pole. Jolie had to go to work 12-4 PM. This has been a very enjoyable day.

Just a beautiful day. We didn’t go to church. Vern called this morning and said he and June would be up. They came with everything for lunch. Very good. They brought red geraniums for Calcium cemetery. We took them over. The cemetery is very neat but getting dry. They left about 4 PM. A good day together.

Partly cloudy. Cool wind. 68°. Tina here. Merrill okay. Legs swollen a little. Merrill has hoed in garden most of day and evening. The car wouldn’t start tonight. He had the lights on it and run the battery down again. I talked with Lyla twice. I called about our wills. I had to send signed letter so Jim can pick them up.

Nice day. Cool wind. Merrill went to day care. Dr. LaPoint 10:15. Everything okay. She gave me prescription fro Tylenol with codeine. Dr. Richmond 1:45 PM. My eye pressure is left eye is 14 so I don’t need drops in that eye. Right eye with drops is 17. Usually 16. WE went to Hills store. Got new blouses. Lyla got cemetery wreaths. We ate at mall. Went to see Jolie at Steinbecks. She didn’t have my size in sneakers. We stopped at Kinney’s in Seaway. I got pills and Coty cologne. Merrill didn’t shut an eye last night. Just prowled the house. I’m so tired today but he seems fine. I know how he does it.

A nice day. I washed a lot of clothes. Great day to dry them. Nice breeze. Doris H called to say Ellen called her today to tell her that Lawrence Hanson 71 died about 10 PM. He had lung cancer. I called Lyla. Vivian was over. They went to camp tonight. The aid didn’t show up to clean today. Jim called in AM. Also in evening about Lawrence. Esther and Ken called in evening. They are going to funeral home for Lawrence Friday evening.

Diary Entry for 5/29/1998

Rained during night. We need more. Rained off and on during day. Merrill went to day care. I’ve called everyone: transportation, housekeeping, and day care so everything is set for nest Thursday. Chad Dudley here before noon. It’s good to talk with him. Lyla and I went to funeral home at Dexter for Lawrence. He looked so young. Dorothy and her daughter Debby is here from Alstead, New Hampshire. Lyla called when we got home and said she had a call from Pauline. They are going to funeral. Nancy H called to say they wouldn’t be going to church the next two Sundays. Jim called on way to Dexter. Said there was lot of cars there.

Diary Entry for 5/30/1998

Nice day. I cleaned house. Washed bed linens and blanket. Lawrence’s funeral today. It would have been his and Jean’s 50th wedding anniversary. Lyla and Pauline went to funeral. A large funeral and lots at cemetery. A nice service. Lyla took us over for groceries after she got back from funeral. Stopped in for a visit afterwards. Jim came on his bike at supper time. Here for supper. He couldn’t charge battery.

A strange day. Thunderstorms, rain, wind, off and on all day. Tornado watch reported. Bad tornados across the US. Jim called from Syracuse to check on us. They took Sue’s sister to airport. She left for her home in Hawaii. We didn’t go to church. It has been a lazy day. I watched Children’s Network Telethon.
