Diary Entry for 1/1/1971

Brenda and Bill Draper engaged. 4° below zero when we got home from Bill and Vi’s at 1:30 AM. We went out to Mom’s. First since Nov. 8th. Ate at diner with her. She gave me $5 for my birthday. I took her plum pudding June made her. I made hard sauce for it.

Mrs. Hagan’s 87th birthday. They had card shower for her. Sent her card. Also Elsie B and Hattie McKeever. Took down tree and decorations. Marie and Vickie here to sew. Vicky finished apron. Got tax notice. $160.68. Much warmer in evening.

30° in morning. We went to church. Gave Vi check $10 for Reconciliation Fund for 1970. BCI Investigator Frank Feigel, 41, killed in plane crash at Longways Diner. Sheri Feigel’s father. She went to State Fair with us.

Still cold but nice. Snowy. Adams and Sandy Creek way. I haven’t felt good all day. Pain in side and back. Merrill met with nominating committee at Leah’s in evening. He got home at 11 PM. Sent Merrill’s accident insurance, $19.

Bible Study at Margaret’s. Pearl P went with me. It was an excellent meeting. Cold all day. Merrill, Carl K, and Jim M put up chimney pipe at Lodge Hall. Jim and Pat here for supper. 15° below at bedtime.

Jim and Pat’s house closing, 10 AM. Got letter from Mrs. Beardsley. Cleaned house. -20 below at 7:30 AM and 3 above at 2 PM. Merrill went to Lodge. Good to have both stoves going but still cold in hall.

Sent Reports [and order] to World Day of Prayer. I went to Philadelphia in morning for groceries and to bank with Lodge books. Got letter from June. Vern goes to Maryland next Tuesday, Jan 19th.

Doreen’s 14th birthday. Vern flies to Maryland at 7:30 from Syracuse to meet with Dr. Maley and committee. Got home in evening. Bible study at Joyce’s. Very nice meeting. 16 out. Aunt Maude called in evening.

Beautiful day. We went to church. Went to Charge Meeting at church in PM, 2:30. Got home at 5:30. Budget for 1970 paid in full with about $350 left over. Marty Rudes has baby girl, Danielle Sheldon.

Marva called to ask me if I would have Bible Study here tomorrow. Baked pie and cookies. Merrill helped clean stove pipes at Lodge. Jim M here in morning., Called Mrs. Beardsley in evening. Sent taxes, $160.60. Sent L [?] insurance, $54. Called Vern’s.

Bible study here. 16 present, also about 10 kids. Rainy, snowy, day. Mrs. Mildred Beardsley here to meet Merrill. Went after her. Got Fire Insurance $275. Jim and Pat here in PM. Didn’t eat supper with us as they were going to Pastor’s for supper. Stormy in evening.

5 below at 7 AM. Cold all day. We went to Jim and Pat’s. Took her slacks to her. Couldn’t get drops at Fays. [They] Are mailing them. Got groceries. Very stormy Oswego way. Hazel Graves, 80, died tonight.

0° at 7 AM. Nice day. Sent sympathy cards for Hattie McKeever and Hazel Graves. Merrill got hair cut at Theresa. I got eye drops in mail. Stormy Adams way. Jim sprained ankle playing basketball.

Nora and Linda here to sew in PM. Peggy and Kenny here in evening. Bible Study at Eileen’s. 18 out to it. I went to WSCS at Leah’s. 14 out. They voted to start memorial fund at church. Each organization to give $1.25 each time some member dies. Mary Hall went to hospital.

Wrote Vern’s. A and G Heating (Parker) Theresa cleaned furnace in PM, $12. Mrs. Beardsley called about UPW of Oxbow. Jim and Pat here for supper. Jim sprained ankle playing basketball Monday night.

Diary Entry for 2/5/1971

Sleet storm. No school Allen Shepherd and Edgar Mitchell landed on the moon at 4:17 AM. Walked on moon for over 4 hours. Our power went off at 11:40 AM and didn’t come on until 11:15 PM. Couldn’t milk or do any work.

Merrill got up at 4 AM to milk. He didn’t’ go to bed last night. Terrible windy and snowy during last night. Marie Gleason here to sew in AM. Nora and Linda here in PM to sew. Had supper with us. We went to Philadelphia for groceries at noon.

Saw 2 crows today for first. Nice day. Second day of fish derby at Sackets. Derby not as large as last year. We didn’t go to church. Went out to Mom’s. Took chicken dinners with us from Carrolls. Snow banks high out there. One way traffic from Adams up. Brenda and Bill getting married June 5th.

Chili Exchange Student at Guild meeting at Martha’s. I didn’t go as it was snowing and blowing. Merrill plowed driveways. Milk truck got off driveway. Sent Marg Hall card and note. Washed c lothes. Cleaned house. First in 2 weeks, Made brownies.

Bible study at Judy VanTassel’s. 16 out. Very stormy. Made out income tax returns. School out early because of storm. Driveways full again. Bad earthquake in California, Los Angeles section. Many killed.

Took 4-H garments to city. Debby and Mary, and Sharon didn’t sew this year. Merrill and I took garments for 10 members. Got eye drops at Fays. They gave me new bottle in place of one mailed as it might have froze. Called Pat and Jim. Jim back to work but not feeling good. Mary Hall came home from hospital.

Church canceled because of snow. Merrill worked all forenoon just plowing out lower driveway for milk truck. Hasn’t opened other one. Called Jim’s. Jim can’t work for 10 days. Has to have therapy treatments on his back.

Charge Conference at Philadelphia. Merrill and I went. Mills there also. Rev. Bird in charge. 15 out. No mail. Washington’s birthday new date. Merrill plowed out driveway by garage. He shoveled a lot by hand. Shoveled out walk. Washed clothes. Baked cookies.

Picked up 4–H garments. Jamie, Nora, Linda, Debbie and Jackie got blue. Sharon, Lorraine, Marie, Judy and Vicky red. PNG’s at Elsie’s. Nice time. We went to city. Had coffee with Jim and Pat. Jim’s back better. He is taking turkey home. Mother T’s 82 nd birthday. Got card from Uncle Berl. No quake there.

I met with Martha and Joyce at Joyce’s to plan FFA Super. Car wouldn’t start so I was late. Warm and thawing today. Lots of water. Jim and Pat here for supper. Jim’s back very bad. Went out on way here. He couldn’t stay all night. Vern called in evening. Are coming tomorrow.
