Star (Toby’s colt) is one year old today. I took Sharon Lovarnet and Cathy out to fair for awards in AM. Jim and Jim Decker here in PM to help draw hay. Our nice Blackie kitten got killed by car in evening. Washed my hair. We got wedding invitation from Beverly Mapslens [?]

Diary Entry for 8/4/1968
We didn’t go to church. Merrill mowed hay for tomorrow. Fed the cows some green hay. We went out to moms in PM. She isn’t too good. Hall kids came over with kittens to give me. Bad fire at city on Newell Street at noon today.

Got card from Steve from Niagara Falls. Send Cindy birthday card. Very hot and humid all day. Drawed 3 load of hay. I went to Philadelphia bank for Jim and Mills for fly spray. Toby and Karen here in evening. They have to move as Hoover has sold building. Merrill called Doug Gleason and Art about painting church.

Cindy’s 7th birthday. Raining in AM. Cloudy all day. We went to Gouverneur fair. We stopped to see Martha Meeks and Jeff. John was at school. They have nice home. Got letter and copy of Vern’s proposal from kids.

Rainy. Last day of 4 day Republican convention at Miami, Florida. Richard Nixon nominated by wide margin. I sat up until 2 AM. Merrill put baler in barn. Washed clothes. We quit haying. Barn full. Sent for 1 year of True Story, $2.00. Merrill cut brush.

Merrill helped Uncle Ray put on new garage door. It fell on Aunt Maude. Cut her head. She had 8 stitches taken at hospital. Dr. Hall. I made blue dress. Washed clothes.

Hot and humid. Merrill started combining oats. Very heavy this year. I went to city for groceries. I called Uncle Ray. Aunt Maude feeling better. Put cows in after feed for first across road. Thunder storm during night.

Sent Holly card and letter. Rained during night. Merrill finished combining 3 acre field of oats. 53 large bags. Toby here in PM. He helped unload oats and helped me mow lawns. Wind and rain in evening. I scrubbed porch floor. Washed my hair in evening.

We had steak cook out at noon. Cool wind. Much colder in evening. Had furnace on. We drove over to Arts in PM but they weren’t home. We also went up to Uncle Rays. Aunt Maude still very lame and sore.

Holly’s 8th birthday. Vern starts teaching. I went up to post office and bank. Merrill started combining second field of oats. Very heavy crop. Howard and boys helped bag and dump oats. Sent car insurance $98. for full coverage. Got 97 bags [of oats] out.

Wrote kids. Merrill combined. Howard started to bale straw but baler wouldn’t tie. Jeff and Hall helped over here also. Jim here for supper. He has new Suzuki cycle.

We finished combining oats. Huge crop this year. Most we have ever had. Howard and boys helped bale straw., Debbie brought us sweet corn from their garden. Bar-B-Q chicken for supper. Terry got other cast off arm.

Nice day. Hall and Zellers went on trip to Corning glass Works and Canandaigua Park. Merrill started combining oats for Ivan Hale. 36 bags out this PM. Toby here in evening. They are going to move into Mrs. Dickers house. Cooke started cellar for Bob and Marilyn’s new house.

Ex President Eisenhower had 7th heart attack. I went to city for groceries. Merrill had to stop combining at Hale’s because of rain. He took car to Jack Hills for oil change. Jim here for supper. Did his wash in evening. Marguerite B, called to tell me to send $2. to District Dept. for Pres. gift. County meeting September 13 at Bay.

Sent Lodge check to PDP Ansted. Also check to Marguerite B for PNG jewel. Washed clothes. Merrill washed car. Rained in PM and evening. Jim and Gary Pastor were here on cycles at supper time for Jim’s laundry. Merrill started fence back across road. Hal Hall bumped his head fooling, and got a concussion. Evelyn called in evening.

WSCS have church service, Rev H on vacation. We didn’t go to church. Halls, Jim, and Jim Decker, Merrill and I went to Vern and June’s for picnic dinner. Boys and Howard rode on cycles. Had a very nice day. Halls went with us. Uncle Ray put cows across for us. Timmy Hall had accident on our road.

Cloudy day. Merrill made fence in AM. He finished combining at Hales in PM. Fred Cook, Dick Plenty, and New Jersey man here to inspect. Jim got package from Al Jennings from overseas, his stuff. Cooke started digging Hall’s farm pond.

Thunder storms in morning. Sent Jim note. Merrill put cows back on 17 acres. Very hot and muggy. 84°. Toby here in evening. They are moving into Decker house Saturday.

Merrill started combining at Howard’s. I washed kitchen curtains and windows. Mowed lawns by house. Jim, Gary Pastor, & Al Hurst, here in PM on cycles. I gave Debbie 2 pair pants and cosmetic case for her trip to Utica.

Debbie went to Utica on busy for 5 days. Her first bus ride. Send $15 for National Geographic for Ken’s and Don’s for Christmas. Rained hard about all day. Howard gave Merrill 2 milk cans. The plant threw out 2 of ours. Sent Karen birthday card. Jim and friends planned cycle trip to mountains.

Karen’s 4th birthday. Beverly Jane Macklin married in Rochester at 7 PM. Too wet to combine. I went to city for groceries. Got 3/4 bu peaches, $2.99 at Johnnie’s. Hot and humid. Beverly fainted at her wedding.

We went out to Mom’s for dinner. David, Doreen, Debbie, Cindy and Karen came home with us for visit. Kids and I went to Payne’s Lake and Pulpit Rock in evening. Jim and 4 other cops came out to Mom’s on cycles. Cloudy and windy.

Too wet to combine. Some showers I took kids and Terry, Jeff, and Hal out to city to show “Yours, Mine, and Ours” at Olympic. Very good. Wrote Vern’s and sent them card. Merrill and Dave, Cindy, and Karen went to Mills and Philadelphia. Merrill went to milk meeting.

June and Vern’s 8th anniversary. I sent Ann Pacifis [?] a sympathy letter. Her mother died last week. Mrs. Murphy. Merrill combined for Howard in PM. Very chilly most of day. Murphy brought fuel oil. We had one of June and Vern’s ducks for supper.

New WSCS year begins. Beautiful day. We went to Bill and Vi’s trailer at Jaques Carter State Park for picnic dinner. Lovely there. John, Martha, and Jeff there also. Martha and two girls came in PM to Vi’s. Jim here in PM while we were gone.

Allan Lanto [?] 40, was killed in accident at Massena milk plant. Merrill built fence back on meadow. Helen Keichel and I went to 4-H meeting at city on records. Leaders to see to them now. Got card from kids from Canada. They spent the weekend at Thurstonia Lodge.

Friday the 13th. Rebekahs State Pres. made official visit at Alex Bay. 10 from Philadelphia went. Leah, Martha, went to dinner also. Francis Ansted and staff looked nice. Alice LaClair went with me. Elizabeth Dunlop, Buffalo, is Pres. We mowed lawns. Jim here for supper. Wrote to Uncle Berl about Mrs. Claude Mount, 80. Funeral was yesterday.
