Diary Entry for 11/27/1967

Jim went to city to see about his car and a job. They are going to total his car. Jim took scuba lesson. 4-H meeting here. All members present. 2nd lesson on food, Let’s Begin. Aunt Mildred called in evening. Mae Strader has had another stroke and is in hospital.

I was sick in bed all day with headache. Jim went to city. The insurance company paid him $2020 for his car. He bought a 1966 Plymouth from Howard, $1686. I sent check for 2 years of Good Housekeeping. Runs out 1964, December.

Jim took Evelyn to city to get their car license changed to red car. Trotters want Jim to drive car back from Connecticut for them tomorrow. I went to city shopping. Got Vern’s and Uncle Berl’s gifts for Christmas. Called Mom. She has cold.

WSCS Christmas meeting at Mrs. Hutchinson’s, 6:30 covered dish. 50 cent gift for exchange. 23 present. Mary H and I didn’t go for supper but went for meeting. Jim went to city. He is going to be car salesman at Trotters. Got first Christmas card, Rev. Hutchinson.

4-H club here. Only 4 members, 2 kids. we made tin can center pieces. Very nice. Rev. H. here in evening collecting for United Fund. Rainy and freezing in evening. Jim went to city twice. Thunder storms in evening.

4-H banquet at Bethany Church. I went with Donna Hall. We skidded into ditch on Theresa road coming home. Bad accident on Theresa road. It was very icy. Rain froze. Merrill and I went to city in pm. Merrill got now glasses. $24.00

We all went to church. Toby here for dinner. Boys went to Philadelphia to show in pm and to city to show in evening. Roads very icy in late evening. Raining and freezing. Merrill and I went to Gouverneur for Christmas tree, $3.00.

Sent most Christmas cards. Decorated Christmas tree. No school because of icy roads. No special celebration for our 32nd anniversary. Toby here for supper. He and Jim went to scuba lesson. Got $5.00 check from Dot and Joe Medina.

Made fudge. Washed clothes. Got notice of Melba and Elmer’s baby girl, December 6th. Merrill clipped cows. Wrote Mom. Donna was here in evening. Jim went to city. State trooper William Boyle shot and killed near Parish, NY.

Uncle Berl’s package arrived. Sent $52.00 to pay for combs. We went to city shopping. Jim and Toby went shopping. Made dipped chocolate in evening They found the 2 men who murdered State Trooper at Parish. One dead.

Glen Clark died in evening. Comb money due. Sunday School Christmas program. Packed baskets for shut-ins. Prepared 30 baskets. Vi and I delivered 15 in pm. Lois and Carrol took the rest. One to deliver, minister took to Lyle B.

PNG Christmas party at Leah’s. 21 present. Nice dinner and meeting. Aunt Maude gave me swan crochet center piece. She was my secret pal. I got Lois H for 1968. Jim passed police physical. He took scuba lesson in evening. Merrill got hair cut.

Had our tree in pm. June & Steve went to city for medicine, . Vern a little better. Kids gave me sheets & cases, laundry cart, Merrill tractor seal & National Geographic. Jim shirt & tie set. Jim gave me cutlery set & diary. Merrill oil cans, knife and rule. Jim got sleeping bag.

Ester Taylor’s birthday. June, Steve, and Dan sick all day with flu. June’s folks drove to Oswego, but kids too sick to drive home so didn’t see them. Lazy day. Glad we celebrated Christmas yesterday.

Martha Meeks called. They have found house in Gouverneur to rent. Wrote Mom and Vern’s. Got letter from Dot. They got package on December 23rd. Merrill feeling better. He did chores today. Jim and Kenny went to city. Jim getting flu. He has sore throat.

20 below zero during night. WSCS at Leah’s. I have program. Charlotte and Ivan Hales baby boy born dead. Cold all day. Merrill went to city for tractor part and groceries. Jim better. He got hair cut. I made bread.

Vi, Lois H and I went to Carthage Lodge. My first January visit. Quite snowy. Merrill and I took out tree and decorations. I made donuts. Got letter from June. Jim went to city. Agway put in feed pipe.

Very stormy all day. School closed early . Jim cleaned his bedroom, rearranged it. I washed clothes. Did some of ironing. Sent Charlotte card and letter. Jim helped Kenny lay linoleum at his apartment in Philadelphia. Washed my hair.

We got letter from Brenda. Clara Zufelt very bad from stroke. Stanley Haggerty was married New Years eve in Las Vegas. Merrill and I went to city for groceries. Wrote Vern’s. Jim got Christmas gift from Linda Bruins from California, Cologne. Aunt Maude called in evening.

Ken’s 48th birthday. Snowy. Jim got notice from City Police Dept. his agility test is Friday, January 12 at 6:30 pm at YMCA. Jim went over to Keichels. Merrill plowed out driveways real good.

New postal rates start. Letters 6¢ airmail 10¢. Cold. We didn’t go to church as Merrill didn’t get work done in time. Mary Hall called. Bertha has operation in morning. Jim went to Theresa to Toby’s. First heart transplant performed in US in California.

Philadelphia Rebekahs. My official visit with APW and International . I got to lodge but very cold. 24 below. Jim went to show with Toby. Merrill went to Gouverneur for heater hose, thermostat, etc., $17.00. Grant store at Gouverneur burned.

20 below° at 7 am. Jim got his gun permit in mail. He went to city for his guns. Merrill and I went to city for groceries. Was 18 above this pm. Sure seems good. First time about zero in 6 days. Got letter from Uncle Berl.

Jim didn’t go to scuba lesson. Rebekahs at Antwerp. Too stormy so didn’t get there. Snowing and blowing all day. Merrill cleaned with cleaner for me. Got letter from Beulah Hall. My burned hand much better but still very sore. Washed clothes. 16 below in evening.
