Ken’s 74th birthday. -27° below zero this morning. Indian River School on 2 hour delay. Sent Ken card and church Benevolence letter today. Merrill took church books to Rosie to audit. I washed work clothes.

Nice today. Warmer but still below zero. Merrill cleaned driveway again. I sent tax return for rebate, $119.69. Merrill went over to see Gary. Agway brought 82.7 gallons of fuel oil, 99¢. Rev. Carol returned from vacation.

We didn’t go to church, 50 there. Our furnace quit. Wiring burnt off. Frank Robbins put new wiring on it. Still below zero in morning. Sunny all day but very cold. I called Don’s. Donnie in Liverpool going to tractor trailer school.

-27° below in morning. Sunny day. Only up to 8° all day. Jim, Sue, and Ashley here for supper. Had been to Syracuse. News breaking tonight of the murder of Sara Ann Woods. Man caught for other children’s death.

Much warmer. Freezing rain. School delayed 1 hour. We went for groceries in AM. Robert Congdon called in evening. Beulah very ill in hospital. They called all the kids today to the hospital. She has had a slight stroke. She went back to hospital last Sunday. She fell in bathtub and cracked rib.

8 above this morning. 51° warmer than yesterday morning. Holiday today. There was a terrible earthquake in California at 4:32 AM. 6.6 on R. scale. We watched it on TV most all day. 33 people dead. Vern called in evening. (Total 55 from quake.)

Merrill cleaned driveway again. Still cold. Finally got order from Blairs that I sent for in November. (gold blouse, ivory sweater, plaid skirt, brown slacks, and navy slacks) all fit good. Terrible stormy in Adams section. Roads closed. Heather and Gilenda here for church money. Ordered Girl Scout Cookies from them. (2).

-22° below this morning. The Gliesner’s (?) barn burned at 5 AM. 15 fire companies there. 60 head of cattle burned. Terrible stormy toward Adams and Syracuse. Everything closed in Oswego because of storm. This sure is a bad winter all over. Worst one in years. Sunny here but below zero. Started snowing here in PM. School let out at noon. Times didn’t come.

-8° this morning. Sunny in PM. Drain pipes still frozen this morning. Merrill went to Antwerp for washer for sink drain pipe. Watertown schools and south still closed as it is still snowing hard. Indian River on 2 hour delay. Merrill cleaned driveway again. I washed dark clothes.

7° above for first time in days in morning. Windy in PM and evening. Blowing snow. Still very stormy out Adams way. Schools still closed there. Also Sackets Harbor. Gladys Lamon called. Indian River School let out at noon. City schools closed.

Very stormy all over. Windy, 22°. Cleared in PM. Merrill cleaned driveway. We went for groceries in PM. Washed clothes. Jim’s 26th anniversary on the city police. He became a member on 1/22/68.

Diary Entry for 1/27/1994

-24° this morning. Warmed up to 8° above in PM. Merrill cleaned out driveway again. Jim called in evening. He and Sue at Explorer meeting. They are surviving our winter so far. Lots of snow at Lorraine. Juanita’s sister Sylvia, 68 died. Her funeral is tomorrow.

Diary Entry for 1/28/1994

40° in morning. Up to 50° during day. Lots of water around. Ice everywhere from last night. Most all schools closed. Route 81 closed due to accident. Agway brought 81 gallons of fuel oil. We have used about 4 gallons a day the last 20 days, plus the wood fire. Church roast beef supper in evening. Merrill went over and brought ours home. Delicious. cost $5.50.
