Diary Entry for 3/1/1974

World Day of Prayer at CEC. Only 11 out but Marilyn gave a nice program. Rev B and girls flew to Georgia. Marva sick. 4-H meeting at Mary Hall’s Canceled. Vern called. There is a missionary named “Vernon Tryon” speaking in Oswego, Watertown area too. Payne’s got home from Florida.

Snow flurries in morning but a nice day. Made donuts. Made a chocolate cake to take to Jim’s tomorrow. Called Jim’s in evening. Invited us to lunch tomorrow after church. Vern’s are coming there also. Postage is 10 cents a letter now.

Very windy. We went to church. Went to Jim’s for dinner. Vern’s there also. They had been to church at Sandy Creek. Vernon Tryon, pilot spoke. Marva feeling some better. Jim McEtherin gave sermon, 23rd Psalm.

Warm. Rained in PM. AG Heating, Parker, here to clean furnace, $17.12. He put on Vern’s control off his old furnace. Merrill and Boots went to Agway for cow pills, Scours. Washed clothes in evening.

Sent Uncle Berl card and letter. A nice morning but colder and windy in PM. We went to Bill and Brenda’s but too windy to put on barn roof. Pat B took his sick cow home. Eleanor and Mom called from Brenda’s. Mom was to Dr. Myerderick. She has a hernia on her incision.

Sent fire insurance, $253.54. $13.34 dividend. Merrill helped Bill D put on metal barn roof. Nice day and warm and sunny. Some wind. Got Eleanor’s letter she mailed Friday March 1st.

Called Jim. He is sick with migraine headache Went back to work but came home. Merrill got 1st Social Security check, $419.30. Started drawing it January, 73. Boots and I went to Theresa bank and to Philadelphia for groceries. Got note and card from Gehm’s. Mother Tryon is in Sodas hospital with pneumonia.

Called Vern’s. Went to Dr. Roberts for shot. Was late when we got home. Didn’t get to go to Eva Riorodon’s [?] wake. Evelyn here in PM. Lynn H went to doctor’s. He has hiatus hernia. told him to get off farm. Grahams have sold their farm for $41,000 to Amish. Called Vern’s. Howard is selling his farm.

Cloudy day. George Graham here. Rev. Jacob Lapp has bought his farm, $35,00 farm, $6,000 machinery. George is putting a double trailer up on corner. Basil Hanson drilling wells for them.

Uncle Berl’s birthday, 81. We went to church. Good to have church back. Marva feeling better. We went down to see Mrs. Beardsley in PM. We went to Lenten service in evening. Very nice. Called Jim’s. Talked with Patty’s father.

We went to Sodus to see Mother T. in hospital. Jim and Aunt Cora went with us. Stopped at Elmer and Melba’s. Jolie came home with us to spend the night. A beautiful day and evening. No snow anywhere.

We went out to Mom’s. Got capsules at Fays on way. Nice day but cold wind. Stopped at Brenda’s on way home. She is having Roberta’s baby shower March 30. I went to Lodge in evening. Only 8 there.

Ground white with snow this morning. Rainy and snowy all day. Washed my hair. Merrill helped Bob Flaherty on pipes at church in PM. We went to a party at Simonds for George & Margaret Water’s 45th anniversary.

Pastor-Parish meeting at Evans Mills, 7:30. All present, also Mrs. Sharpe. PNG’s Martha Brown’s. I didn’t go. No school today because of snow. Roads not good. Merrill went to Lodge. Carl K came after him.

WWNY has been on the air 20 years today. I went to Bible Study with Ruth. Only 5 and Lisa R there but a nice meeting. Jim, Patty and Jolie here for supper. We had twin calves. Very small. Both died.

I went to Dr Roberts for 5th B-12 shot. Got shower gift for Roberta. Nice day. Merrill got birthday cards and letters from Ken’s and Roy and Marg. My blood count was down to 5 on February 11th. Up to 11 March 12.

4-H Dress Review. Postponed 1 week because of snowy weather. Merrill helped Bob F. at church. Fixed faucets on kitchen sink. I called 4-H kids about seed orders. Grace called in evening. Mother T. went home today from hospital. She is at Elmer’s.

Diary Entry for 3/22/1974

Sent $20, 4-H seed order. Washed my hair. Dr Scanlon, 2:15. Everything OK. Pressure 17 in both eyes. We got $32.61 of paint for kitchen. Merrill made appointment with Dr. Hewitt for Monday at 2:30. Got groceries on way home at Philadelphia. No special cake for Merrill’s 65th birthday.

Sent Eleanor, Juanita and D Wayne cards. Merrill got card from Juanita. Sunday School paper drive. Cleaned house, washed clothes. Merrill and Boots went to Theresa for cabinet hinges. Only get 4. Letter from June. Vern goes to Chicago, Anchorage Alaska, Tokyo and Seoul Korea. Comes home by way of Hawaii.

We went to church. Had Trustee meeting afterwards. Bob Eggleston is going to put siding on rest of church and parsonage and paint parsonage roof. $4000. I read the book “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom in PM. Excellent. Very snowing in evening.

Merrill’s appointment with Dr. Hewitt, 2:30. He had x-rays and impressions for upper teeth. Had 2 teeth pulled. 3 more to be pulled. Cost for all, $400. Wrote Vern’s. Stopped at Brenda’s. Took snack trays over. A nice day but rather cool. Gave Boots a bath.

I went to Bible Study. No leader there. Windy and snowing off and on all day. Milk inspector here. Queens do not want our milk after March 31. Vi called to say Ken sold his cows to Conklins. She saw Eleanor last night.

Rebekah’s. 14 out to it. Leah, Margaret M and I went to Ruth Schell’s to plan for shut in visits. Merrill called Borden’s Plant for field manager to come out. He said he would come today but didn’t’ come.

Nice day but cold wind. I went over to Evelyn’s in PM awhile. She invited us to Debbie’s reception at McCormick’s, May 19th. 4-H dress review at State Building. Dawn, Marie and Lorraine modeled. Mary drove. Evelyn and I went with her.

I went to Philadelphia for groceries in AM. Had Gillette to check cows. Only one off. Gave her shot, $17.50. Borden’s Field man here. Will start sending milk there next week. Got Vern’s schedule.

Roberta’s shower at Brenda’s. A nice shower and Roberta got lots of gifts. It was so icy and rainy. Several didn’t try to come. Jim stayed over here. Patty and Jolie came home with me. Aunt Maude and Lila went with me. Dawn Hall’s picture in Times in her 4-H apron.

Gave Boots worm capsule. We went to church. Heard Rev Al Coppelridge for first. About 8 inches of snow. Communion breakfast. 88-90 there. I didn’t work on it. Snowed most of day. Almost a rain. We went to Mills to church in evening. Rev. Coppelridge’s last service here. Blanche rode home with us.
