Diary Entry for 7/3/1973

Rose Lanphere, Evans Mills, died of cancer. Cleaned up hay, 451 bales. Very heavy. Merrill went to Theresa for shear bolts and spark plug. I painted black railing and post lamp.

Diary Entry for 7/5/1973

Boots and I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Merrill raked hay. Sent Vern’s note. Merrill went to Mills for twine, $7.50 a bale now. I cleaned upstairs. Waxed all the floors up there. Broke dresser mirror in Jim’s room. Cleaned kitchen, dining room, and bed room floors.

Diary Entry for 7/6/1973

Drawed 2 loads of hay and also trailer full. 651 bales now. Cooler today. I waxed porch floors. Washed Merrill’s clothes and rugs. Got letter from Uncle Berl. Gave myself a Toni in evening. Arnold Graham here, 2 1/2 hours. Postponed picnic to July 15.

Very hot. We ate at Kay’s Restaurant. Church starts at 9:15 now. A good crowd out to church. We went out to Mom’s. Juanita and Wayne at Ogdensburg. Jack Foster, 57 died July 4th. Made Jolie birthday cake in evening. Our cat Andy has been gone a week.

Picnic at Jim’s. We celebrated Jolie’s birthday tomorrow. I made her cake. Very hot day. A very enjoyable day. Merrill raked hay in morning and mowed some in evening. Wrote Dot. We saw Bill D at his farm.

Got $73.75 check for 4 day old calf. Jeffrey Meeks spent day with Dan. He is such a nice little boy. We drawed 1 load of hay. Rest not ready yet. Merrill mowed all 3 lawns. They look nice tonight. Very clear in evening. Sun bright.

Friday the 13th. Lightning damaged our TV. Merrill raked hay. Vern’s got here about 4 PM. I went to Philadelphia bank and store. Had terrible thunder storms in evening and during night. Terry’s car broke down at Lafargeville. They walked home.

Boy’s 4-H picnic at Brown’s Park, Not too many went but nice time. Halls, Schell’s, Wilmert’s, and Tryon’s. We went to Legion doings in evening. Glenn Simonds won the Gremlin Card. We got home at 11 PM.

Boots woke Steve up at 6:30. Drawed 2 load of hay. Had to change wheel on wagon. Merrill and Steve raked hay in AM. Started mowing back of rock ledge in evening. Jeff and Dawn was over in evening. Washed clothes.

Andy came home after being gone 2 weeks today. Put in 3 load of hay. Finished 17 acres. Merrill pulverized road back through pasture. Steve and us got letter from June. Called insurance company about TV. They will pay damage.

Raining in morning. Vern called. had car inspected at Cross’ $3. Jeff came home with Merrill and Steve. Boots is sick. We took him to Dr. Scranton at Gouverneur, $11. He has tonsillitis. Vern’s got here for supper. Brought chicken and strawberry shortcake.

Boots a little better today. Beautiful day. We drawed 2 load of hay. Not too dry. Vern raked and drove on baler. June and boys rode up on load of hay. Halls have new truck. Their Siamese cat got run over by Albert Payne.

I took 4-H cards to Halls and Marie G. Watertown Fair starts. We didn’t go to church. We all took Boots to Dr. Gillette. $10. He has pneumonia and infection. He put him to sleep to examine him. Men drawed load of hay. Vern’s left about 2 PM.

Payne’s bought 10 acres of hay @ $10. Boots not any better. So hard for him to get his breath. Merrill raked hay but not dry enough to draw. Vi called in evening. Wants us to come Sunday. A beautiful day. I washed clothes. Lawn umbrella broke.

A very hot day. Merrill mowed hay. Boots much worse this morning. We took him to vets at 1 PM, $9. Gave him shots and pills for infection and breathing. Temperature normal. Drawed 2 load of hay. Merrill raked hay in evening. Merrill went to Mills.

Very hot and humid. Drawed 3 load of hay. Very cloudy in evening. Boots lots better. Acts like himself again. Some fun getting pills down him. Wrote Don’s and Vern’s. Washed my hair in morning.

Don’s 50th birthday. Very hot and muggy. We drawed 1 load of hay. Cleaned field. We took TV to Thompson’s. Cost $23.65. Got ‘bill hook” for baler, $14.79 at Ennis. We went to Sackets for ladder. Boots and I went to Philadelphia to bank and grocery store. Raining in evening.

Rained off and on but sunny most of time. I defrosted freezer. It needed it bad. Merrill fixed hay rope and mowed away hay. We went to Fair in evening. 4-H building so nice this year. Larger Midway this year.

Sent $20 to Times. Sent bill to insurance company for TV repair. Merrill mowed all 3 lawns. It started raining in PM and they looked so nice and green. I washed clothes. Cleaned house and mopped kitchen floor.

We went to church. Leah and Claude went with us to Bill and vi’s camp for picnic. Les and Beulah there also. A very enjoyable day. Good to all be together again. Another beautiful day, but cool wind.

Dr. Scanlon, 10:30. Dark room examination. Everything OK, $15. Merrill raked hay and started drawing hay before I got home at 1 PM. Very hot. No breeze. Dawn brought over a big cuke.
