Diary Entry for 5/1/1972

Initiation at Antwerp. Philadelphia has 2 candidates, Pat Klock, and Elnora Lincoln. I didn’t go as Mary was too tired to go. Merrill took our car to Larry Floods for fender. We finished lawn by barn. I did Mom’s washing. A summer day, very warm.

Raining hard during night and all day. I went to Bible Study. We had supper with Catholics. They hosted at our church. Good turnout and nice time. No WSCS meeting this month. I got car at Floods with new fender.

WSCS District meeting at Mt. Pleasant Church. I went with Esther, Margaret, Leah, Willabelle, Carrie. Nice meeting. Rained all day. Merrill had flat tire on tractor. Valve blew and broke. Lynn took it to Gouverneur. Thunder storm part of night.

Cloudy. Washed bedroom curtains and draperies. Sun out in late PM. Patty called. She is having a Tupperware Party Sunday at 1 PM. Lorraine Hall got chosen for 4-H trip to Ottawa.

A beautiful morning. Raining in PM and evening. Merrill built fence by road until it started raining. I washed clothes. Washed dining room curtains and woodwork. Put couch on porch. Dawn called to say she had 4-H rose bushes.

Patty’s Tupperware Party. I went to it. Merrill took Mom’s wash home. We went to Sunday School and church. I went up to Keichel’s after 4-H rose bushes in evening. Saw the five new puppies. Ordered a little male one, $15. Percy Pratt’s dog, a chihuahua, father. Nice day but cool wind.

Sent Jim and Pat anniversary card, letter and $10. I went to Bible Study with Anne. Merrill took car to Gouverneur for new engine mounts. GMC recalled 1966 cars. Painted windows again and washed draperies. Merrill didn’t get car fixed. Has to take it back.

Jim and Pat’s 3rd anniversary. June called. Vern flies to Maryland tonight. Comes back Friday evening. Washed clothes and windows. Made cookies. Merrill built fence. I went to Lodge in evening. Pat B next door, came in evening.

Mother and Children’s Banquet, 6:30. Church full. Great program. Celebrations from Holy family played and sang. I worked in kitchen. Sat down to eat with Patty and Jean Baker. Esther and Margaret M didn’t get to sit down. Men helped. Pat B here. Bought small pump, $25.

June and Vern called. All OK for doctorate. Beautiful day. Pat B here in morning. We went to city. Got stair step carpet. Millie Flood went to hospital for tests. Merrill got case of tractor oil, $10. I got white blouse. Bea Gehm called. Got Patty 2 piece dress for birthday.

Rebekah’s sponsor Centennial program and dance. We went to program. The dance was at the hotel. Cleaned house. Jim, Pat and Jolie and Tammy here for supper. Had top down on car. Merrill went to Theresa with Pat B. Jim & Pat gave me bed pillows and pin for Mother’s Day. Gave Pat her birthday dress.

I went to Bible Study. We went to Sears. Had set of new tires put on front, $86.50. I got dress material, $3.12 and 1 gallon white paint. Rainy off and on most of day. Rained all night. Merrill fixed washing machine. Pat B went back to New Jersey.

Washed my hair. Merrill put clapboards on parsonage, new window. Rainy in morning but cleared in PM. Washer not working again. Made $51.10 on Lodge Centennial doings last Saturday.

I went to Philadelphia to bank and grocery store. Merrill mowed all 3 lawns for first time this year. Look nice. Roberta and boy friend Steve, here in evening. She graduates Sunday.

Bought Kenmore washing machine, $239.88, and 2 year service contract, $21.95. Lorraine Hall goes on 4-H trip to Ottawa. Had car wheels alined at Sears. I went to Howlands new store for first time. Nice but expensive. We got glads at Webb’s. Brought our dog “Boots” home from Ben Keichel.

The Bowman’s left at 10 AM. Lazy day. Merrill took washer apart. Hall kids over to see “Boots”. A beautiful day. Taylor’s asked us to go to Ottawa but we couldn’t get around in time. Roberta graduated from Morrisville.

PNG’s at Esther’s. I didn’t go. Merrill went to Lafargeville for tie rod for tractor, $28.50. He turned the cows out both day and night for first this year. Dawn was over to play with Boots.

A beautiful day. I took Mom home. We visited Aunt Keitha. Evelyn and Carl and Jim’s on way. Got Mom groceries. Also stopped at Adams Journal about by-laws for Rebekah’s, $5 a page. Merrill worked on land. I didn’t go to Bible Study. Juanita got new gas range.

Another great day. I worked outside all day. Mowed 2 lawns. Set out zinnias kids brought me. Merrill fitted oat ground. Dawn was over. Sears brought my new washing machine. I went to Lodge.

Cooler and windy. I helped clean Lodge Hall. Merrill went with Pat B to city. Pat got bathroom stuff. Dawn here. Sears here to hook up washer. I did washing. Merrill got hair cut at Theresa.

Nice day. Washed my hair. Wrote Uncle Berl. Merrill fitted ground. I washed bedding and rugs. Mother T, Leslie and Grace came about 11:30. Here for lunch and then went to see Aunt Cora. Came back for supper and to spend night. Bob E and men put roof on Pat’s house.

Diary Entry for 5/28/1972

Mother T, Leslie, and Grace left after breakfast. We went to church. Went to city, Fays and Tony’s in PM. Saw Jim at Fays. He had warts removed from neck. We put plants on Dad’s grave. Aunt K, Jean, etc. was at Uncle Carl’s grave. Wendell Fleming, sister and her husband killed last night in car accident.

4-H here. Only Marie and Lorraine came as Linda didn’t call the girls. Rainy in AM. Merrill put shingles on back of barn. Called Vern’s in evening. All set to go to Maryland. Vern got new job at College. Chairman of Department of Industrial Arts.
