Diary Entry for 9/1/1971

Beautiful day. Merrill started combining oats. 23 bags out in PM. I mowed all three lawns. Got dark before finished one by barn. Washed Merrill’s work clothes. Sent Jim birthday card, $10, and letter. Guy here on cycle from Conservation Department.

Merrill combined oats, 21. I made donuts. Jim and Pat and Jolie here for supper. We played cards until 1:45 AM. Jim out of work with his back. Al Jennings and wife visited Jim’s. I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Elaine in hospital.

Church at 9:30. We went. Vicki Tousley 16 years, died this morning at 9 AM of a brain hemorrhage. Streakers at party last night. We went up to Aunt Maude’s in PM. Merrill finished putting iron rail on her steps. Hot today.

Labor Day. Hot and humid. Hottest day, 92° of the summer. I watched Jerry Lewis Telethon all day. Merrill combined awhile in PM. We went to Tousley’s in evening. Debby H went with us. Vicky so pretty.

WSCS Margaret M. 13 out. We went to city and got charcoal grill at Fays, $7.98. Called Patty. Jim planned to go back to work tonight. Vicki and Marshall have baby boy born at 5 PM. Scott Marshall, 7 lb, 2 oz.

Vicky Tousley’s funeral at church, 2 PM. We didn’t go. Merrill put grill together. I went to Rebekah’s in evening. First meeting. Had party for Edith Seeley’s 84th birthday. School starts. Dawn Hall started kindergarten. Merrill finished combining 84 bags.

Merrill put new leather on pump. Cost $2.07 at Theresa. Cooler day, but nice. Washed my hair. Put color rinse on my hair. Merrill raked straw. Started diet. Sharon here in evening selling magazines. (Senior subscriptions)

Hot. Merrill finished raking straw. Didn’t get any baled as baler would not start. I went to bank and got groceries in morning. I mowed lawns in evening. didn’t didn’t get one by barn finished. Washed clothes.

Hot and muggy with storm, thunder, and rain in PM. Party at Bob Payne’s for Larry Patckin’s, [?] 21st birthday. I went to city in AM for shoes for Merrill but couldn’t get any. Got myself beige sandals. New tractor tire blew. Got it fixed at Brown’s, $12.

Church starts at 11:15 AM. A new adult class starts today. Marva taught it for Tracy Robertson. (His brother died in Pennsylvania) Ray, Naomi, Ethel, Jack, Pat Klock, Merrill and I, Hazel S, Sina, came to it today. Vern and June called in evening. Are coming Friday.

Wrote Vern’s. Still raining. Bible Study started again, 9:30-11 at church. Merrill and I went to city. Merrill got work shoes at Penny’s, $79.56 a pair. We visited new Woolworth store for first time. Very nice. Ate lunch at Harvest House, the restaurant there.

Rebekah’s State President official visit at Clayton. Dinner at McCormick’s. I didn’t go. Merrill went to Frys after chopper canvas. Didn’t have one. He went to Mills for points for lawn mower. We mowed two lawns. I made cookies and cake.

Baked cookies. I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Merrill went to Fry’s for chopper canvas, $138.53. Cloudy day. I got notice to jury duty trial at Antwerp September 30th. Vern, June and boys got here.

Vern and Merrill put new belt on chopper. Nice day but cool. Jim, Pat and Jolie here for dinner and supper also. Donna H here in evening to return snack trays. Kids all left about 6:30. Jim’s back not much better.

Past Noble Grands Club here. Mary Minnie had fruit salad, crackers and cookies. 13 P Grands here. Les Hall came and visited. We ate by candlelight and fire light. Cozy evening. Merrill chopped 3 load of grass in silo. Rained hard off and on all day. Power went out about 9:40 for 4 hours.

Vern’s birthday, 35 years. Bible Study. I went with Pearl. A grand meeting. We have come so far in one short year. Merrill chopped grass. Debby and Dawn over in evening. Debby sang song for 4-H Talent Show, If Not For You.

Rebekah’s supper at 7 PM. Losers put on supper for winning side. Election of officers. NG Nancy Rose, VG Esther Taylor, Sec Diane, Financial Secretary Lois T, Treas. me. I went out to Mom’s. Took her to Adams for groceries and bank. Merrill chopped first corn.

Fran and Mickey’s 26th anniversary. I didn’t send them a card. I figured Lodge books. Everything checks. Too wet on ground to chop corn. Merrill got one load. Sharon here in evening. Renewed Newsweek for only 1 year, $14.

4-H Talent Show. 7:30 PM. Debby sang and played guitar. Got red. Evelyn and Dawn went with me. Called Jim. He is still home. Dr. wants him to go back to hospital. I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Merrill chopped 3 load of corn. Quite wet on ground.

Sent school taxes, $271.65. Sent checks for two of Mom’s bills, hospital and anesthesia. We mowed all three lawns. Belt on corn chopper broke. Chopped 2 loads corn, 8 loads corn, 6 of grass in silo so far. Betty Rudes called about Betty Fikes taking VG. Called DDP Lillian Neuwrath about it.

We went to city for belts for chopper. I paid Dr. Marilley for Mom. She has to send bill to Medicare herself. Cloudy day. Merrill chopped corn in PM. I went to Council of Ministries at Parsonage. Rev. B’s sister had baby girl, Susanna Wesley. I stopped at Aunt Maude’s with book.

Bible Study. Finished review of Romans. Merrill chopped 4 load of corn. Got letter from Debby, Mom, Sent last doctor’s bill, $89.60. I worked at 4-H reports in evening. Marguerite B. brother died in California.

Wrote Mom and Debby. Lodge book audit at Carrie’s. Marguerite, Lois W and Lois T, Diane there. Betty and Nancy had to work. Merrill chopped 4 load corn. Thunder storm in PM. Esther called. Asked me to be on WSCS Executive Committee. Called Jim’s. Sharon here in evening to make out 4-H report.

Trial Jury Duty, 7 PM, Antwerp. I was excused. Thorton boy, Philadelphia, hearing assaulting a State Trooper at Antwerp Field Day. Dr. Gillette, vet, checked cows in morning. All OK. Merrill chopped 5 load corn. Ironed, washed clothes.
