Diary Entry for 6/1/1971

WSCS and Altar and Rosary meeting 6:30. Covered dish. Nice evening. 43 in all. 21 Catholics and 23 protestants. I planted garden in PM. Went to Bible Study in AM. Mrs. Carrie Ryan died today. John Keichel in California on way home.

Another nice day. Four days milk in tank. They picked it up in PM. I finished 2 piece dotted swiss dress. Rained in PM and evening. Marion S called. Also Vi. Merrill went to Depauville, Burrville, and Talcott Falls to see about scoop for tractor.

Dark and rainy. Rained all night. I went to Martha’s to plan Father Son Banquet. Joyce, Dawn, Esther also. We are having ham. 51 policemen have been killed so far this year. I went to Marian’s in evening to plan 4-H outing.

I had tooth filled in PM, $5, at Dr. Sommers. Rained hard in evening. I got head net, green at Philadelphia. Called Patty. They have bought a ‘58 station wagon, $60, 60,000 miles, 1 owner. Washed my hair in evening. Made Jell-O for Brenda’s reception. Mrs. Harold Hayden, 77 died today. Heart attack.

Brenda Hanson and William Draper married at Lorraine Church. Lovely reception and wedding. Girls,and Dave looked so nice. Lots of lovely gifts. Vern’s and Jim’s there, also kids, 4 grandmothers. Mother T, Leslie and Grace came soon after we got home Had been to Aunt Cora’s.

Mother, Leslie and Grace left about 11 AM. We didn’t get to church as we didn’t have time to make it. Nice day. Merrill mowed lawn by house. I sat in the sun. Also weeded flowers. Aunt Maude called.

Vern’s plan to bring baby furniture to Jim’s today. Rebekah’s. I went. Washed clothes and bedding. Made all the beds up fresh. Mother T’s neighbor called in evening about curtains. Merrill worked at corn ground.

Rev. B and Marva’s 10th anniversary. Merrill and I went to city. Took barrel for WSCS to be shipped to Marjorie Mills in Africa. Cost $8.50 to send by Byrnes truck. Merrill paid it. Called Patty. Called Aunt Maude. Cheryl goes in hospital Tuesday at carthage for cyst operation.

4-H Indian Party, 4:30. Jamie “Big Chief”. All here but Sharon and Debby H. Nice time. Mary brought down cup cakes in evening. Bertha Gleason, 10, S Carolina guest. We started planting corn for first. Agway spread fertilizer on corn ground.

Arlena Reynolds and Leland Shannon married. We planted corn most of day and evening. More to do. Talcott Falls insurance man brought new manure loader in AM. Took over 3 hours to put it together, $552. Tricia Nixon and Ed Cox married today.

Student Sunday. 7 graduates present at church. Quite a few out to church. We went for ride in PM. Stopped at Aunt Maude’s. Oxbow church had a service at Pulpit Rock today. We finished planting corn in evening.

Nice day. I worked in garden. I mowed lawn by house. Merrill mowed center lawn. Merrill went to Talcott Falls to pay for Loader. He got new hose for it. I washed clothes in evening Washed my hair.

Father and Son Banquet, ham, 7 PM. Not many out, about 35. I got home at 9:45. Cleaned. Bible Study. Last meeting at church until fall. Cheryl goes into Carthage hospital for operation tomorrow. Merrill drawed manure all day. Kay Taylor’s 19th birthday today.

Mom’s 79th birthday. Beautiful day. I went to city. Met Jim and Pat at the Globe store. They got baby things. I got Mom radio for her birthday. Got Merrill shirt and pants for Father’s Day. Merrill drawed out manure.

Hot, 80°. I went to Philadelphia for groceries in AM. Cleaned house in PM. Aunt Maude called in evening. Cheryl is coning good. Merrill got Father’s days cards for Vern’s and Steve and Dan.

Merrill finished drawing manure for awhile. Glad to be rid of the smell. Jim and Pat here in PM and evening. Brought Merrill box of candy for Father’s Day. We played cards in evening.

Church picnic. We didn’t go to church. 4-H picnic at Brown’s Park, Canada. About 60 there. Nice day and nice time. Lots to eat. Called Aunt Maude in evening. Cheryl is good. Rained in evening. Gave Merrill shirt and pants for Father’s Day.

PNG’s outing, 6:30, Cold Creek Inn. 20 PNG and Cathy went. Cathy, Lois, Leah, and I drove. My car loaded. I didn’t go to Bible study. I went to hospital all day. They moved Mom to room. Nellie Hodge, 84, died today.

New Woolworth Store opens today. Merrill sowed Sorghum. We went out to hospital in PM. Mom has to have surgery in morning. Called Ken’s and Uncle Len’s and Jim’s. I didn’t go to lodge. Last meeting till fall.

Merrill cultivated corn. I went to hospital at 7:20. Mom had operation at 8 AM for appendicitis. Marg and Roy came in morning. Eleanor there all PM and evening. I stopped at Patty’s shower at Elaine’s.

Raining. I went to hospital about 10 AM. Mom had a bad night. They put drainage tube in her nose. Saw Dorothy Tibbles Ball at hospital. Mom’s roommate Mrs. Moore, died on operating table.

June’s birthday. Washed clothes. Went to Philadelphia for groceries in PM and I mowed lawns. Uncle Len and Betty here for dinner. I went to hospital about 4 PM. Stayed until 8:30. Merrill worked at barn getting it ready for US Inspection.

Vern’s left about 9 AM. He called from hospital. Mom feeling better. Her IV taken out of arm. Sent Merrill’s accident insurance, $20. Sent $2. to Town and Country. Wrote Uncle Berl. Merrill hurt arm in calf pen. Run nail into it. I didn’t go to hospital. Eleanor called in evening from hospital.

Diary Entry for 6/29/1971

I went to hospital at 11:45 AM. Got home at 8:30. Mom sort of uncomfortable but coming good. Juanita and Brenda there in PM. Merrill finished cultivating corn. Sent $3. checks to Susan and Vicky Puffer. I have used eye drops one year now.

Washed clothes. Defrosted freezer. Merrill worked at hay rack. Aunt Maude and I went out to see Mom in evening. She is feeling much better today. Called Aunt Keitha. Very hot all day. Thunder storms about 12 PM. Very humid.
