Diary Entry for 2/20/1971

Raining. Froze on in evening. Very icy in AM. We went up to Philadelphia for groceries. Rev. Blankenship here to call for first time, 2 1/2 hours. Nice visit. He brought Handbook for Council on Ministries. Aunt Maude called in evening. Washed my hair.

Council on Ministries at Griffins. 14 members present. Carl Horton only absent one. Wrote June and Uncle Berl. Sent Dan card, letter, and $1. Called rest of 4-H girls about meeting and flower ordering. Got letter from Uncle Berl. Sent clipping of quake.

Merrill helped clean closet at church. 4-H here for pastry lesson. All here but Mary and Sharon. Lodge in evening. DDP Beatrice Hubbard made official visit. Dorothy and Eva Williams with her. Marva B went to Mercy Hospital.

Snow in early morning but a real nice day. Debby brought over Evelyn’s coat to shorten. Cleaned house. Sent card to Marva. Made cake. Filled pie shell. Called Jim’s. Can’t go back to work for 2 weeks. Kenny Rudes in hospital with his back.

Vern’s didn’t come. Jim called in evening. They were coming out if Vern’s were here. We went up to Philadelphia in AM for groceries. Beautiful day. Sent letter to Assembly President Elizabeth Lee about DDP Bea Hubbard.

Raining in AM. Beautiful day later. Sent Kenny’s card to Marcy Hospital. He is in traction with his back. I fixed Evelyn’s coat, shortened it. Merrill took it over to her. Vern called from city. They are coming to Jim’s tomorrow. I washed my hair.

Power off for four hours during night, 1-5. very windy. We went to church. A beautiful service. Marva came home from hospital. We went to Jim’s. Vern there also. Took Dan birthday gift. Jim worked at Fays yesterday and today. Very, very bad coming home. 10 car pileup. Over 30 people hurt.

A nice day again. I made apple pie to take to Parsonage. Vi and I took the Visiting Church Service to Ruth Schell. Ruth has lost 24 pounds. Sent Fran card and note. Merrill went to Lodge in evening. Election of officers.

Started dining room. Canceled IOOF at Redwood. Terrible storm. Porch full of snow. FFA Banquet at school canceled. All schools closed because of storm. Worst storm of the year. Milk truck got this far. Only thing by house. Pat and Jim called. Pat has negative blood. Cut hole in chimney. Tin rusted out.

World Day of Prayer canceled because of roads and parking due to storm. Plow over at 9 AM. Philadelphia plow didn’t come over today. Can just get through Philadelphia end. Lots turned around at town line. Merrill worked all AM plowing driveway, 4 hours.

Beautiful morning with lots of clean snow and frost on trees. Blue sky. 50 above in morning. Sent Uncle Berl card and letter. Got one from him. We went to Philadelphia for groceries. Merrill went to Mills for lumber for book case, $16.25. Aunt Maude called.

Cut and washed my hair. Another very stormy day. No school. No mail. Milk truck picked up 4 days of milk. Snow emergency called because of all roads plugged. Merrill finished book case. Looks nice. Margaret G called and asked me to take part in PTA report. Joe Frazier beat Cassius Clay, 15 rounds.

Bible Study canceled. Antwerp, Philadelphia plows over at midnight last night. No school. Sent fire and wind insurance, $72.55. 4-H Dress review changed till next Tuesday. Merrill plowed out driveways in AM. Martha called to say FFA Dinner will be March 15th. Got thank you card from Marva.

Rebekah’s. I’m on committee, crackers, cheese, cookies. I didn’t stay for supper as it was snowing. Nice day in AM. Uncle Berl’s birthday. Jim and Pat here for supper. They took Mrs. Hall to Gouverneur Hospital tonight. Got letter from Beulah Hall.

World Day of Prayer. It was postponed last week. Not too many out but a nice program. Music program with kids, great. I finished tearing off wall paper in dining room. Merrill got hair cut at Philadelphia for first time. Got shower invitation for Chris Sabo.

FFA Banquet. 90 present. I worked in kitchen. Got home at 10:45 PM. Washed my hair. No PNG this month. Sent Roberta letter, card, and $1. Sent Nettie card. Snow going fast. Everything flooded.

Dr. Scanlon 2:30. Everything OK. I went to Bible Study at Jane’s, about 20 present. We went to Garn’s. Got Ben Franklin stove, $145. Saw Roy and Marg at Sears. Aunt Keitha is coming home from Cathy’s this month. 4-H Dress Review in evening. Debby, Mary, Sharon, I didn’t go, sick. Good crowd.

Roberta’s 19th birthday. I painted new book case. Garn’s delivered Ben Franklin stove. Hearth had a crack in it. I called Garn’s about it. Blue boy, bird, is talking again and acts well again after a week or so.

Nice day but cool wind. We went to city. Changed cracked stove hearth at Garn’s. Called 4-H kids about Demonstrations. Called Patty. Jim went back to work last week Thursday. Has Sunday and Monday off. Got invitation to Open House for John and Elaine Hockey, April 3. Jim and Pat’s deed in Times.

Chris Sabo’s shower. I didn’t go as it started snowing hard in PM. Painted dining room ceiling. Looks nice. Rupert Davis got 35 bales of straw, 30 cents. Snowed hard all evening. Merrill got birthday card from Roy and Marg.

Still snowing. 8 inches this morning. Plow was over in morning. Marie Gleason here in PM to work on her 4-H Demonstration. Nora and Lorraine didn’t come. Washed clothes. Washed my hair in evening. Aunt Keitha got home from California.

Merrill’s 62nd birthday. He worked on base for stove. Evelyn brought us two sheets of hard board from Mills, $14.31. I painted in dining room. Council on Ministries at Marguerite Beach. Didn’t get home until 11:45. I had two teeth filled today, $10. Merrill got several cards. Also letter from Gladys L.

Bible Study at Marva’s. Big turn out. Also about 16 kids. I finished painting dining room. Merrill went to Theresa for gas and cat food. Merrill got several more cards. Got letter from Uncle Berl. Started second fire in stove in evening.

Donnie’s 1st birthday. Merrill got card and letter from Don’s. Brenda wants Merrill to give her away if Don won’t. Merrill finished chimney for stove. He went to Philadelphia and Mills. Rupert Davis got rest of straw. Cleaned.

4-H Dress review at Carriage House. No one from our club went. 4-H here. Business meeting. Lorraine, Marie and Nora did demonstration. Took shower gift, Chris Sabo’s, to Aunt Maude’s. Washed clothes in evening. Washed my hair. Tired tonight. Merrill took car to Theresa for wash job.

We went to city to get machine top welded. I got watch, S&H Green stamps, 5 books. Debbie Hall’s 18th birthday. Also Bob Flaherty’s. Got fireplace set at Garn’s. Youth Lenten Service, 9 PM. Debby went with us. We had cake and ice cream at Halls when we got home. Saw their kitchen for first. Beautiful.

Vern’s called in morning. Came about 1:30 PM. I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Sent Dave card, $1. We enjoyed fireplace in evening. Toasted marshmallows for first time. Raining in evening.

Dave’s 17th birthday. Rainy all day. Snow melting fast. Vern’s left about 4 PM. Planned to stop at Jim’s. We gave Vern’s $23.10 for half of 3 months diaper service for Patty. Vern’s part, other half.

Sunday School paper drive. Gary Ashley and Chris Sabo’s wedding. Jerry Ashley’s 6th birthday. 25th anniversary open house for Edna and John Hackey at Ogdensburg. I washed dining room curtains, drapes, and windows. Washed clothes. Cleaned house.

Bible Study at church for first time. Too many for homes. Not quite as many there today. Jim and Pat here for supper. They went to Toby’s in evening to have income tax figured. I went to WSCS at Carrie Thompson’s in evening.

We went to city for groceries. Took out some clothes to dry clean. I got green sneakers, $2.27. Communion service at church. Good turnout. Nice service. Evans Mills people there also. Got Easter cards from Vern’s.
