Diary Entry for 9/1/1970

WSCS at Esther’s. Mrs. Blankenship attended for first time. I went to Ruth’s to study club. Mrs. B gave wonderful testimonial. We finished baling straw. Gave some to Jim Schell’s as barn was full. I called Ken’s in evening.

Jim’s 27th birthday. Robin and Tammy Hall’s birthdays also. Washed clothes. Merrill stored combine. Merrill got milk machine pail from Howard to try. We went to Philadelphia in evening for groceries for tomorrow. I’m not too peppy today. Pain in head, left side.

We went to State Fair with Ken’s. Percy Pratt milked for us. Rained off and on but wasn’t too bad at all. Saw Lawrence and Lyle’s at Fair. Also, Buster and Marie. We got home at 1:15 AM. Bought a wig at fair. $19.

Rained all day. Merrill stored machinery. I wore my wig all day. Merrill hasn’t noticed. Got letter from June and Vern yesterday but didn’t get our mail until morning. Mr. Durant Mussena [?] here about FN. Tired all day. Merrill slept in PM. Marsha Lapine, 52 died this morning, heart.

We went to wakes for Marsha Lapine and Bob Miller. Went over to see Clara Wallace. She is very cozy in new trailer home. It is very nice. Debby and Joe were here in evening. Debby sang song for me for 4-H talent show.

State Rebekah’s President visit at Clayton dinner at McCormick’s. I went in evening with Esther, Vi and Lula. 165 present at meeting. I went to Ruth’s to Bible Study. Merrill got chopper ready to use. Wrote Uncle Berl.

First day of school. Rebekah’s, 18 out. Deputy Sheriff Mike Dennison [?] 24 shot to death on routine call at John Banner’s home at city. Washed my hair. Baked 5 pies. Aunt Maude and Lila here to cut out dress.

Wrote letter about lost slides to Bests. Sent $3 to “Mike” fund,. Sent Readers Digest subscriptions for Vern’s, Jim’s, Hall’s, and us. @3.97. Mike fund up to $7300 so far in morning. $12,700 in evening. Lynn H helped put up ensilage pipe.

Church back on 11:30 time. We went for first time since church started at 9 AM. We ate lunch at Benton’s and stopped at Fays to see Jim and Pat. We came by Gary and JoAnne’s on way home. Had coffee with them. Their new home is nice.

Study club here. I gave lesson on “Quest of the Least Coin”. Just 5 of us. Merrill and I went to city . Merrill went up to Dick Ennis. Bought a used chopper as ours won’t work. Rainy. Cleaned upstairs. Mike fund at $22,236.

Merrill mowed 2 lawns. I washed kitchen curtains and windows. Mom called in evening. Leonard Rockwood and wife in accident at California. Brenda isn’t going to college. Has a job at Grand Union in Adams. Mike fund at $27,000 at 5 PM. Rained in AM. 4-H office called about Singer Open House. I’m to go Wednesday. Lois Hanlon called. Mike fund at $29,475,

Ennis Inc. brought used Allis Chalmers chopper with grass, corn pickup $200. 4-H here. Only 5 here to make out project reports. Sent Vern card, $5, and letter for his birthday. Beautiful day. I went to Philadelphia in morning for groceries.

Mrs. Blankenship’s 31st birthday We went to church. Church was almost full. Great sermon. We went to city. Ate lunch at Grants. Stopped at Fays. Got lamp shades. We stopped to see Mrs. Mildred Chase Beardsley on way home. Nice visit.

Vern’s 34th birthday. PNG’s at Vi’s. I didn’t go to Past Grands. Jim and Pat here in PM and for supper. Jim helped Merrill change chopper heads. Very warm this PM and in evening. 75° Got letter from Dot Medina

Merrill went to Frys for chopper chain. Patty and Elaine Phillips here. Patty brought lamp shades and Merrill’s pants. Washed Merrill’s clothes. Very warm. Did my hair coloring. Debby over for 4-H project sheets. Got cards for Library Drive.

Fran and Mickey’s 25th anniversary. Singer Open House at city 1-4. Eight 4-H leaders there. Leah’ Simonds step mother is dead. Merrill chopped 2 loads of corn. The first this year. Study Club at Gloria’s. 7 out. Rebekah’s election of officers. Betty NG, Nancy Rose VG, Diane Sec., Lois H Fin Sec., Bea, Treas.

Diary Entry for 9/24/1970

4-H Leaders Meeting at city 7:30. Sharon went with me. Gerry away for a year. Helen Murray and Tom Dumas in charge. Very hot and muggy. Cleaned upstairs. Sent Fran and Mickey 25th anniversary card, late. Willabelle Brown in hospital for eye operation. She has had glaucoma 3 years.

Stormed during night but hot and muggy again today. I went to Philadelphia to bank and get groceries. Merrill took old chopper apart. Went to city for part but they have to get it out of Syracuse. I got eye drops at Seaway. Waxed sun porch floor in evening. Called Mildred Beardsley to come up.

I went down to Theresa and got Mrs. Beardsley. We stopped at Grahams to see Kitty Allow. Mrs. B there for supper. She used to live here. She told us that rock pothole back of ridge was made by Indians. It was so nice having her visit. Worked on Rebekah’s Treas. report in evening.

Finished Lodge report in morning. All checks. We went to church. Mr. Owen LaForce preached. He is a mail man. Very good speaker. Gave Jamie, Tam and Rob Hall and Mary L 4-H reports to fill out. Worked on 4-H reports. Called some of the girls about projects.

4-H Talent Show. Debby sang. Got red. Millicent, Evelyn, Dawn, and Sharon went with us. Big crowd this year. Washed clothes. Merrill went to city and Adams Center. Merrill didn’t get part off chopper. Will tomorrow.

Study Club at Marva’s. We had 10 out. New ones, Esther and Pat. We started the study of James. I went with Ruth. Merrill went to Adams Center for chopper part. Put it together when he got home. I went to Theresa to see about 4-H window.

Frank Flemming, 74 funeral. he died Sunday. Merrill got chopper going. Chopped three loads of corn. Rained hard in evening. 15 policeman have been murdered while on duty since Jan 1st. 500 homes burned in California forest fire.
